cant manage to instal OSX to restored G5

I am currently in the middle of a G5 restoration project.

a little back story: I bought a non working G5 ppc of ebay and managed to bypass the issue of bad motherboard (three blinking led lights at startup) by swapping the whole motherboard out.

As the hard disk is new and formatted, i need to install OSX. The machine starts up without issues (chimes sound, loads up the apple logo) but im running on this error every time I try to install OSX (10.4.9 version).
any heads up on how to proceed?

additionally, i know I will have to run the fan calibration software, any ideas on where I can find that?

thanks and apologies for all possible errors, I'm quite new to the mac world

That screen shows what is called a "Kernel Panic". (Bad news!)

Do you get that screen when attempting to boot from the OS X 10.4.9?

Is it a retail DVD? An OEM disk that came with a different computer will NOT work, as those are highly machine-specific.

Is the hard drive formatted for Mac OS Extended HFS+ (Journaled)?

The Calibration software comes with a machine-specific ATH (Apple Hardware Text) on the OEM DVD or CD that originally came with the Mac. Ulike the OS, the ATH does not come on a retail disk. You can't buy thatfrom Apple either. You'll need to provide the exact Mac machine number (such as PowerMac11,2) and hope someone who can help you out in this regard can see your email address in your forum profile.

thanks ramon, that cleares a bit.

so the error yes comes up right as the booting starts from the DVD. The copy I have is from another power mac but I got it from another machine, so it might me that the versions are not compatibile. As far as I know the hard drive should be rightly formatted, but will check that as well, it's a but hard to get that running as the only machine I have capable of reading it is the mac itself.

the machine number (serial) is the following:

CK3401TNVB

hope this helps the more experienced out there

Then we can rule out HD directory damage as cause of the kernel panic, a common problem (Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk for the Mac are known to cause the kind of directory damage that can lead to kernel panics), and leaves us with either an incompatible DVD or, more likely, some serious hardware damage like a bad mother board, bad RAM, damaged HD, etc. An incompatible DVD would just not work but would not cause a Kernel Panic.

That will be hard to troubleshoot given the many variables and unknowns you're dealing with.

Unfortunately that is neither a serial number nor a Mac model number, so that doesn't help.

Even more unfortunately, the way to read the Mac's serial number reliably is through software, namely Apple's System Profiler, once you've booted up. 😝

It would have to be not just from any Power Mac but from an identical model. Otherwise you will need a black retail Tiger install DVD that looks like this:

Hope one of the top participants chimes in with more troubleshooting ideas.

Good luck.

Call 800-MY-APPLE and give them the model and serial number of your Mac and request a Tiger replacement disc, which they should provide for about $17.

1.— They haven't had such replacements disks for a G5 for quite some time now. I tried getting one a couple of years ago (August, 2011) and they were already unavailable back then.

2.— It's doubtful that the OP's serial number matches anything after he put in a replacement motherboard.

On behalf of the OP: thank you for your efforts to dissuade the OP to attempt any of the help that I have provided for him!

Your two year old anecdotal experience is, as is obvious, quite out of date. Apple recently refreshed many of its supplies of replacement discs and as testified to by many on this forum, they have been receiving replacement discs.

BUT OP: don't take my word for it; feel free to just give up and do nothing...

Also, a serial number on the back of a Mac is still its serial number, whether the motherboard has been replaced or NOT!

Here is what I have. My guess is that Apple decided to make low cost Tiger and Leopard DVDs available withen you as for the restore dvd.

Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5 DVDs are available from Apple by calling 800-767-2775 as of January 20, 2013. Have your serial number ready. Have your credit card ready too. There is a small fee.

If you mean retail, low cost Tiger and Leopard OS install DVDs, that would make sense. It's a good thing if they're doing that.

What the retail DVDs lack is the machine-specific AHT (Apple Hardware Test) that was originally included in the Restore media that came with each particular machine.

Dear all,

thanks for all the relevant information. In the end I resolved my issues with a little workaround: I restored my empty HD using a friends G5 HD as image.

now everything boots up nicely and smoothly. The only issue I still have is that the fans are not calibrated. I Guess I need to find the Apple service disk to tune them? or is there any other workaround to quiet that **** of a fan noise?

thanks again
