I am not able to work out how to stream from my iphone directly to the TV (apple tv conncected)

In brief (assuming you have a wi-fi network) Play some music using music app, Double-click the home button, slide bottom left to right. You should see a litte down arrow, choose your ATV from the pop-up menu. Exact method varies a bit by device and iOS version, so if that doesn't work you might try reading the manual (iOS #.# for iPhone) it should be listed under AirPlay or Mirroring...
If you don't have a wifi network try the answer listed on right named "stream iPhone on appletv"
