Does closing my Macbook put it to sleep?

I just got a macbook pro and I've always wondered this. What I do is just click the apple logo on the top left and manually put the computer to sleep if I'm gonna be gone for a little while. I noticed that my 2 friends, who also have macbook pros, just close the mabook and that's it. Doing this, does it put the macbook go to sleep?

Yes closing the lid puts it to sleep.

Yes it should, you can tell by the light on the right front will be blinking=sleep

Yes, it goes to sleep.

There is a little light in the front edge of the computer. It should illuminate when you close the lid. Shortly thereafter it should begin to pulse. When it is pulsing the computer is sleeping.
