MacBook Pro 2011 Apple SSD Problem/Corruption?

Hi there,

If anyone can help with this, it would be great:

I have a 15" MacBook Pro late December 2011 with the latest Mountain Lion, 8GB Ram, and a 256 SSD from Apple (installed when I bought it - I opted for that instead of the regular HD).

Lately, the computer has been heating up a lot, the fans kick in, and it gets very hot. It's never shut down due to overheating, however, and I use this computer every day, all day long and in the evenings as well.

I figured something might be wrong so I decided to check with Disk Utility. So after rebooting and logging in with my user, I ran Disk Utility, and it says that the volume was found to be corrupt. It instructed me to reboot with Command-R and run Disk Utility again, which I did.

And when I do that, the disk utility in recovery mode says that the disk is absolutely fine and has no problems with it. I ran it several times after rebooting each time into recovery mode, and I get no errors at all. But in normal mode, Disk Utility says that it is corrupt each and every time.

So I figured I'd do a time machine backup (which I do once a week anyway) and get ready to reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch. But before reinstalling, I'm wondering if anyone has any further information for me on this subject? Is there any other way that I can check the disk? Should I do the whole reinstallation thing? Even with Time Machine, it'll be a bit of a pain to reinstall everything I need/use for my work. So I'm just looking for any other answers or information out there which can help me before I take the plunge.

Thanks for any information and any help - it is greatly appreciated. 🙂

Nat.

If it were me, I would turn off FileVault2. Again, I have never used it and I may be "hackable" as I only use my account login at restart, coming out of sleep and coming out of the screen saver. I have important files password protected and use 1Password to help secure important passwords, credit card information and other information.

I just wanted to say thank you! It worked. I turned off FV2, I rebooted in Command-R recovery mode, and disk utility found tons of errors. It corrected them, and I rechecked it. It gave me the all clear so I rebooted in regular mode, ran Disk Utility once more, and it found zero errors.

It's also kicking in the fans a lot, lot, less now. So whatever was going on might very well have been related to FV2. I don't think I'll turn it back on for now. I also use 1Password since well over a year and I absolutely love it. 🙂

Thanks! I just did it and it seems to work fine. It was working pretty well since this morning anyway, but I did it just to be sure.

I've decided I probably will be reinstalling the system anyway this weekend because after the encryption thing, I'll want to format and clean it up anyway - just to be sure. Probably paranoia and all, but since this computer is literaly my life...I'd rather not take any chances.

But this definitely helped me out and I have to thank you. I'll keep Filevault off as, after having thought about it, I don't really need to have it on anyway - at least for the forseeable future. If I start traveling around again quite a bit, I might turn it on but I'll remember these steps (as I saved the entire discussion in my DevonThink Pro DB).
