It sounds like you have terminology confused. First off there is no software called Apple.
Mac or Macintosh is the name of the operating system for the Mac.
Secondly, you can lose items on your libraries whenever you upgrade or at anytime due to impermeability of data. You should always backup your data before doing an upgrade as hard drives can die at anytime, and frequently when upgrades happen because they tax drives a lot more than a simple application update.
Lastly if you have an old PowerPC (Rosetta) version of iPhoto, or iTunes it will not work on 10.7 or later, and you'll need a newer version of iLife or iPhoto to read your libraries in Mac OS X 10.7 or later.

Thank you for this info. I wonder if you can also answer another query for me. I am a trifle dumb on the computer workings! I changed our email address and in 2011 I downloaded a few games. We are on holiday overseas now, and have tried to open them, but the message I am getting is that I cannot open them as I have not already purchased them. But when checking I purchased them on my old email and password. Can you advise?

Actually "Mac" or "Macintosh" is the name of the computer platform. "Mac OS X" or "OS X" is the name of the operating system.
The App Store billing might be able to help you, or the vendor of the said software.
