Facebook Contact Sync Problem

Hi, I never had the problem of syncing my Facebook contacts with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 but recently I turned off my Facebook contact sync on my iphone 5 at Settings>Facebook>Contacts and turned it on later, and immediately I noticed only 41 out of 817 Facebook contacts were synced with my iPhone and I lost all the merge with my existing phone contacts.

I tried this on my brother's iPhone 5 and hitted the same problem, he has 747 Facebook contacts synced to his device prior to turning off the sync, and after turning off the sync and turning it on later, only 75 out of 747 contacts were synced to his iPhone 5.

I did not dare to further try this on my iPad 2 as I scare it will screw up the contacts I linked on my iPad.

Looks like there is a problem with Facebook contact sync on iOS.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

I've been having this same issue, as have many other people (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5073228
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5071662https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5072692https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5073167). Except this has happened to me on my iPad Mini which is still running 6.1.3, while my iPhone, also running 6.1.3, is perfectly fine. This appears to be a problem with Facebook rather than the new iOS.

I have as well. I've also noticed that a friend I just added tonight is now not in my iPhone contact list so this definitely appears to be a Facebook issue rather than one with iOS. I've still got a service call with Apple on Monday morning and they're going to probably get nothing done unless they can figure out what's up with Facebook.

The guy I've been talking to has been nice but we're no closer to finding a solution. He is saying it's something to do with the Facebook privacy settings changing when that can't have happened to so many people all at once. I even got him to sync his Contacts with Facebook and out of his 600 Facebook friends only 50 got copied to his Contacts.

Basically, instead of complaining on the forums expecting someone to have discovered something on our own, what we have to do is send in tech support requests to Apple and the more people who report this issue, the more likely that the technical people will be able to find a solution for everyone rather than just trying to troubleshoot what appears on their end to be one person having this really strange problem.

I've been on and off the phone with him while he tries to figure out the issue and also because of our respective meetings and breaks taking place. I will update you if something gets resolved, but I doubt it will today.

Thanks Ryulong, I agree with you that we need to report the issue directly to Apple technical support so that when more people are reporting this issue, the technical people will look at issue and find a solution for everyone.

I have reported this issue to apple and hopefully others who have the same problem also do the same.

Well I've talked with a bunch of other people at Apple Support today and the funniest thing was that they've also experienced this weird thing on their own iPhones. The senior technical advisor I spoke with said he would investigate this further (after he had me reset all settings on my iPad so now I have to add back all of the wifi networks I had gotten passwords for) and we will see if there's a solution tomorrow.

Everything kind of looks like that there's an issue with the communication with the Facebook server, but the apps are fine. Something is still up but there's no solution just yet.

Okay. I just got off the phone with the senior technical advisor and he and his associates found the issue.

Facebook must have recently changed how its privacy settings affect how information is sent. If someone has any of their contact information set to "Don't Show on Timeline" or "Only Me", none of the information is sent to the iPhone. I just tested it with a friend who was not appearing in my contact list and after changing his "Only Me" and "Don't Show on Timeline" settings he showed up in my contact list, again. Picture, birthday, email, phone number, etc.

So the next step is to notify Facebook about the error and hope that we can escalate this to be fixed prior to May 31 settings.
