Can't change refresh rate for external display

I have a NEC PA-271w external monitor is connected to a 2.6 MBP with retina display.

The NEC's maximum vertical refresh rate is 85Hz.

But system preferences only gives me 60Hz, without the option to raise it to 85 Hz.

Why is this, and is there a way to change it?
