I have no problems with my Western Digital external at all. I have had several different brands of external hard drives and no name enclosures over the years and my Western Digital is one of my favorites. Just because you got bit by a drive one time doesn't mean you have to discredit the brand all together. Hard drives go bad, enclosures go bad, it's all normal. It doesn't matter the brand, you will eventually run into a bad drive or a drive that is DOA. Just make sure you know the warranty of the hard drive or the reseller before you buy it.

I bought two WD external drives about two years ago: two died within the year, one was immediately replaced in guarantee, that one works fine, when I brought the other back, they did not have a replacement and I got a Toshiba instead. I have a long experience with Toshiba, Toshiba and Samsung: perfect and no fancy frills.

Ofcourse a lot of WD work, otherwise they would not be sold, but a lot cause problems, look around in this forum and other, and some die straight away.

For some unknown reason I cannot get a link to be active.

Here is the gizmo I was talking about, that one can simply plug in a cheap bare drive and have an external hard drive.

And here is a usb 3.0 version:
