Time machine stalls and quits

I have tried everything already suggested throughout these discussions but my TM will only backup approx 47.7MB of 37.08GB.

I'm using a MBP running Mountain Lion and have run Disk utility on the USB drive which contains the Sparsebundle, to no avail.

I found this in a MacWorld Forum :-

"Didn't work for me in 10.5.2! My time machine image corrupted a few times running 10.5.2, usually due to the mac going to sleep during the backup, and it required fsck_hfs with the -r switch (catalog btree rebuild) to repair successfully each time. Disk Utility always failed to repair the image. I assume that's the change in 10.5.3, Disk Utility now runs fsck_hfs with -r. "

Can someone tell me how to use the 'fsck_hfs -r' on the offchance that this might solve my problem?

Thought you might like to know the latest !!

After a) updating the firmware on both WD external drives (500GB and 2TB) (and that's another story !), I installed and ran Disk Warrior. Apart from Directory renovation and producing a set of '.plist' files -- No help.

b) Started CarbonCopyCloner. This stalled at finding an Adobe file:- PPKList. This was deleted and I have to say that from that point everything began to fall into place.

Time Maching is again running normally to the 2TB drive (original bundle) and I'm using CCC to run backups to the 500GB drive.

In the middle of all this I tried to run a command in Terminal to reveal hidden files (trying to find the .plist files listed by Disk Warrior) but generated a 'DS_List on the desktop which will not delete !

Also, at some point I lost the Startup Chime and I have reset the SMC and PRAM but I still don't have a chime although it did sound twice at the PRAM reset (and once afterward).

Thank you for suggesting the use of Disk Warrior and Carbon Copy Cloner.
