Mac keeps randomly freezing

Until yesterday my 2012 13" MacBook Pro has been working perfectly. Now it freezes and all that doesn't freeze is the spinning beach ball whenever I open a program and at random intervals throughout general use. It happens even when the CPU usage is very low (sub 5%) and with lots of ram free (5+gb). It's really annoying and makes the computer very frustrating to use. Any help is much appreciated.

Soundflower appears frequently in crash reports. It hasn't been updated in years and its support forum is moribund.

You are using Google Chrome, which is notorious for causing problems on a Mac. I recommend using a browser that isn't specifically designed for delivering targeted advertising to you, such as Safari or Firefox.

com.codecm.uploader.plist

Are you aware that you installed spyware on your Mac? Most people would not choose to install such junk unless they are deceived into doing so.

Sep 27, 2013 9:15 AM in response to John Galt

That was a quick response! thank you very much, I've just uninstalled soundflower, i hope this helps to get my MBP running faster.

I started using Google Chrome yesterday because I thought Firefox was cousing these problems, I'll go back to firefox immediately.

I was not aware tht I installed spyware on my computer, do you have any idea of how can I uninstall it?

Thanks for your help and time!

Sep 27, 2013 12:48 PM in response to Krkss

1. Quit Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or whatever web browsers that may be running.

2. Copy (triple-click to select it) the following line

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

3. Using the Finder's Go > Go to Folder… menu, paste it in the text field and press the Go button.

4. Locate the file com.codecm.uploader.plist and drag it to the Trash.

5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 using the following line:

~/Library/Application Support/

6. Locate the file Codec-M and drag it to the Trash.

7. Log out of your account, and log in again.

Codec-M is not likely to be related to the crashing problem, but it is not a codec. Therefore it's deceptive and not to be trusted. Its true purpose is to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want, and may cause your browser to become sluggish.

There may be other places for Codec-M to hide. In an abundance of caution I recommend you uninstall Google Chrome completely. You can always reinstall it if you wish, but beware of anything that asks you to install a "codec" or "optimizer" or "accelerator" or anything similar. This applies regardless of whatever browser you prefer to use.

If you're still having trouble after following the above, please start a new Discussion since everyone's problems are unique and deserve specific attention. Your EtreCheck results showed other potential causes that should be explored. Thanks!

Dear John

I have been reading this thread and it seems like you are extremely helpfull in assisting people with random freeze problems on ML. I had random freeze problems the minute i upgraded from Leapord to Snow Leapord, i thought upgrade to ML would help but it hasnt. Essentially its a mouse freeze and nothing works, it usually happens on internet/itunes but sometimes happens RIGHT at startup, here is the report I generated.

Thanks so much for your help!

Oct 3, 2013 7:17 AM in response to MarcusSagharchi

Hi Marcus,

The first suggestion is to remove Aladdin's Stuffit Expander, which has been suffering a long decline since January, 1995. Its usefulness ceased shortly thereafter.

Also, unless you are still using a BlackBerry (does anyone any more?), uninstall anything related to it.

My earlier comments regarding Google Chrome still apply.

There are other potential causes for slowdowns and freezing. If the above does not result in an immediate improvement please start a new Discussion so those other concerns can be addressed.

Oct 5, 2013 1:36 PM in response to John Galt

My MacbookPro started freezing randomly on Thursday, Oct 3.

This is the rport for the latest crash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Marc

I am having similar random freezing issues. I am quite sure that it started up after I began hooking my computer up to an Epson projector for presnetations. Other than that, nothing that I know of began with the freezes. I then got Sophos to check for any virus/malware issues, nothing came of it. I repaired my disk permissions, and attempted a disk repair which failed, so I reformated and reinstalled the OS from a recent time machine file.

Any suggestions? Here is my Etresoft output. My free ram is not always so low, but it does seem to get chopped down as time goes on. Additionally, if there is any bloatware on here that could be dissposed of, I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!
