10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?

The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).

Bootcamp Trial

Booted into Windows 7 64bit

Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.

Specs

Retina Macbook Pro

LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T

Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Very frustrating. Happened to me as well with a Mac Mini and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. The odd thing is that I did a complete re-install of 10.8.4 and the screen was fine for a bit. I almost posted on this forum that a re-install would fix it. Then I walked away from the computer for a bit, came back and that black bar on the left came back. Arghhh. Not certain what to think of that but I don't have the time to try another re-install. Hoping Apple fixes it soon so I don't have to look at this stretched screen for much longer.

Problem Identified

I am using a 3rd party mini-display adaptor, not made by apple. A friend of mine loaned me an apple made adaptor, and the problem was immediately fixed. It appears that the 10.8.4 update broke the compatibility of my 3rd party adaptor. I will now have to purchase a proper adaptor.

Same issue as everyone else here, common demnominator is 10.8.4. I hope they fix this fast.

Just called it in and talked to senior support. Nothing they can do right now but wait for a software update unfortunately. She suggested we post to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Only thing we can do is be noisy enough that they pay attention and address this ASAP.

P.S. This is the last time I update my computer to something new right away. Have had more and more issues with Apple with this sort of stuff and have lost a lot of stock in their "it just works" slogan.

Same problem here...running an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo and ever since the 10.8.4 update, the external display is not working. I use a "Apple" Mini-DVI to Video (RCA/S-Video) adapter to an old school 4:3 TV...I read some threads thinking this was a 3rd party adapter issue, but it is not. When I click OPTION-F1, I get either the blue adjustment screen dim, and then nothing happens, or the iMac screen goes black. On both occasions, nothing shows up on the external display (TV). I tested the adapter on my children's computer, which was still running 10.8.3...extended display worked....I updated their OS to 10.8.4 and sure enough, same issue. I sure hope they fix this soon. I was encouraged by an Apple employee friend to submit the problem on their feedback page...the more people the better.

10.8.4 has some video glitches for sure. With me it is minute (single pixel?) green dots that show up on dark backgrounds and the galaxy swirl default screen saver. All was fine until .4 -- somebody talked about using time machine to reinstall 10.8.3. If somebody can explain how to do that I might try it. Otherwise will either look it up or wait for a patch.
