10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?

The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).

Bootcamp Trial

Booted into Windows 7 64bit

Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.

Specs

Retina Macbook Pro

LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T

Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Very interesting. Based on the success of others using Time Machine, I was getting ready to go back to 10.8.3, but then I noticed that my pixillation problem had magically disappeared. I have no idea why (although for a couple of other reasons I have done two "restarts" in the past 24 hours), but as long as I don't have green pixels dancing across my screen, I will stay with 10.8.4

Unlike others, I have been experiencing intermittent occurences of the black bar/shifted 1920x1080 resolution. For me a Sleep and restart seemed to reliably do the trick to restore a properly situated full resolution image.

Just for kicks, I decided to switch VGA cables to see what would happen. My current cable was an older VGA cable with relatively small ferrite beads at either end, 6 feet in length. The "new" cable was a brand new heavy-duty VGA cable, 10 feet in length with heavier shielding. I expected that it would perform in the same manner.

However, it turned out to be the reverse. The new cable would only display the black bar / right shifted image at 1920x1080. I moved back to the old VGA cable and once again have restored a proper image.

I am left wondering if this issue is related to some sort of signaling issue that is a combination of hardware (cable) and the video drivers.

Just thought I would share this experience in the thread in case it triggered any ideas.

I'm having the following problem with my Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro + Dell U2407 Monitor:

At random times, the screen image flickers then the display is shifted horizontally so that the apple menu appears on the right hand side of the screen!

Now I'm getting random graphical display issues. All seems to have started happening in the last couple of days, after finally installing 10.8.4.

Unplugging the external monitor and just using the internal laptop monitor, and the display issues disappears.

Definitely seems to be an issue with the external video drivers in 10.8.4!

Similar issues to everybody - runnng an older mac mini, 2009, my external HP2309v display is VGA via a 'genuine' apple adapter - no problems before 10.8.4. Since though, intermittent occurences of the black bar/shift to the right of the monitor's native 1920x1080 resolution. A restart can fix it for a while but sleep shifts the desktop image again. None of the screen resolution system tools on the net did the job - so Time Machine'd back 10.8.3.

I am connecting my MacBook Pro with a straight cable, no special adapters. I have contacted Apple in different ways. Through the "Apple Support Communities", "Apple Developer Bug Report" and "Apple Feedback". The only reply I got was from the "Apple Developer Bug Report" was this:

"This is a follow up to Bug ID# 14126731. This bug has been closed as a Duplicate. The issue is being tracked under the original Bug ID# 14087869 which is also listed in the Related Problem section of your bug report. To check the status of the original bug report, please visit the Related Problem section of the Problem Detail view of your closed duplicate bug."

The state of the bug as of today is "open". That is all of the information I get from the "Bug Reporter", no additional information as to when should we expect the fix or any recommendations to a temporary solution.

I found a solution for my computer/monitor setup! I spent more than an hour with Apple technical support trying to solve this issue. They were very kind, but we couldn't find a solution to the image shifting to the side on the external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro. They were going to research the issue and get back to me tomorrow. Meanwhile, I decided to try using a different cable. I was using a cable that had a DVI connector on one end and a RGB connector on the other. I switched to a DVI to RGB Apple Adaptor connected to a RGB to RGB cable and the problem went away. My monitor is now running fine and detecting the proper screen resolution. It seems that the trick is to use an Apple adaptor which appears to be wired correctly for the external monitor port.

Something definitely changed on the latest OSX 10.8.4 update that affected some external monitors using some cable connection configurations. If you are experiencing this isue, try using a different cable/adaptor. Good luck.

Like everyone else on this thread, I have a problem with plugging in external monitors after upgrading to 10.8.4

but my problem is a little different from others. I work at a university so reguarly carry around my macbook, plug in the external display for powerpointing etc and everything shows up. Now, however, I get a picture of a galaxy, not what is on the macbook screen showing on the external display. If I go into system preferences - monitors, that window appears on the screen behind me, but no others, so swapping into preview for a pdf for instance, just gets the galaxy screen. HOwever, and this is the odd bit, opening up a ppt, and then pressing 'play show', the display works perfectly, just like it did in 10.8.3

Can anyone shed any light on this? Or am I going to have to wait for an update?

thanks

I'm having a similar problem.

I have a late 2008 macbook pro, conncected to a TV via VGA and an apple original mini display port to vga adapter and 10.8.4

When I turn on my computer, external display is OK.

When the computer goes to sleep, sometimes when I wake it, the external screen is off to the right with an black line.

If I unplug an plug again the monitor the problem gets fixed.
