10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?

The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).

Bootcamp Trial

Booted into Windows 7 64bit

Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.

Specs

Retina Macbook Pro

LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T

Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes, this worked for me! If you have your monitor connected via a KVM switch, you have to remove the monitor from the switch and connect it directly to your MBP. Then perform the option click to detect the displays. Once you have done this, return to the Display tab and you will most probably find that there is a new resolution for your display (mine changed to 1920 x 1200 for my Dell U210 display). Click on this new resolution and the screen should display normally.

40" Monitor - 1920x1080p - through VGA adapter.

Same Issue - this happened immediately after the release 10.8.4 a few months ago. I problem solved, and at that point there wasn't a thread about the issue as it was too new, so I moved to recover from TimeMachine. My recovery errored out and didn't work, and I ended up having to do a full system restore and then install all the files from TimeMachine. Lost a complete day of work.

So I decided I wouldn't install this update until 10.8.5 was released, and then today, I restarted my machine and it automatically installed (sneaky) and slam, same issue with the screen and still no resolve. Now I'm not going to lose the day to recover to a previous version. So come on Apple, provide the patch!

So ridiculous.

I have a MacMini at home, with a 42" Monitor - 1920 x 1080p display through VGA adapter, updated to 10.8.4 with no problems.

Other in the office have Macbook Pro, with same monitor (40" 1920x1080) but they connect with HDMI adapter and have no issues.

I don't want to switch to HDMI because the HDMI is too grainy compared to the VGA. (In fact, why does anyone use the HDMI if they don't have to??)

Come on Apple, hurry up.

I have the same issue. I use two external screens in two different places. I have never had the problem with one screen, but when used a another in a different office the problem arises intermitently. You simple never know when it will happen. The only "magic" way to solve the blue screen is restarting my mcbookpro. This is honestly annoying and hope Apple really cares about this issue.

I have had the same problem with my mac pro with a dual screen system on 10.8.4. Interestingly enough only one screen was offset. The display card has dual DVI outs with dual DVI-VGA adapters to twin monitors at 1920x1080. The two DVI->VGA were different makes and if I swapped them around the black bar moved to the other screen. After rummaging around I found a third DVI-VGA adapter and swapped the bad one. Problem solved with no black bars. This was working 100% fine with the bad adapter on 10.8.3 so it appears to be a compatability problem created by 10.8.4.

Hope this helps someone.
