10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?

The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).

Bootcamp Trial

Booted into Windows 7 64bit

Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.

Specs

Retina Macbook Pro

LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T

Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Upgraded to 10.8.5, but unfortunately nothing changed, same problem persists. Too bad for Apple to ignore their clients that face such a serious issue. And apart from not helping us out, there is not even the slightest information or official briefing about the problem we are facing. I guess this is Apple's way to make us upgrade to 10.9 Mavericks. Shame on you Apple for your terrible silence and lack of support regarding this issue.

Has anyone gone from a working 10.8.3 to 10.8.5? If so, how did it go? I used Time Machine to go back to 10.8.3 after I discovered the screen issue in .4, but not sure if it is worth a shot to try upgrading again. I mounted a new disk to take a fresh time machine backup just in case, I figured it would be easier than the original 10.8.3 full backup from a couple months ago.

Hi, just to say I tried SwitchResX on the cursed 10.8.4 and it didn't work before time-machining back to .3 where I am now stuck. After getting over the fact that .5 wasn't any better I've since discovered that I can't update the xcode developer tools I need to build ios7 apps, as it turns out .5 is a prerequisite! I'm on a mac mini, so the only monitor I can use is external - dead end for me.

i bought new adapter dvi displayport, i will test this sunday, will tell you if its better

because i test my macbook air on appletore with an display of imac on thunderbolt port and its ok

Avoid switchres because if you use a bad resolution, you are in the cheat.

But if you have this problem launch your mac in echec mode with cmd + R and launch terminal end delete file of resolution. I will give you those files if you want

So i think the problem was my adapter

wait for sunday

I tried the direct jump from 10.8.3 to 10.8.5, no luck. .3 was fine, went to .4 initialy, had the 1 1/2" lines on the left and 1/2" on the right. Time machined back to .3, was good.

Went to .5 today (direct from .3) and the lines on both sides are back. The lines were there as soon as .5 booted (.4 initially was fine, lines came after it went to sleep overnight). I did try the profile fix listed in this thread, did not work.

Time machined back to .3 again, all is working as expected now which rules out a hardware problem, this is pure software.

Apple?

No, your adapter wasn't broken. The issue was introduced by the update to 10.8.4 and it made non Apple adapters non compatible. I have a DVI port on my MacBook Pro; not a Thunderbolt. After the update it caused the same issue described my most users here. I replaced my non-Apple adapter by an Apple DVI to RGB adapter and the problem was solved. It seems to me that Apple wants us to buy their adapters. They must be making a lot of profit!

That is not the case with me. I have an original Apple MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter that used to work fine before "updating" to 10.8.4. And 10.8.5 simply does not resolve anything regarding the issue being discussed here. So I don't think it is the originality of the adapter that causes the problem, but the software and, perhaps, in combination with the system configuration and settings. Mine is MacBook Pro 5,1 Late 2008.
