10.8.4 External Display Problem

Updated my rMBP to 10.8.4. The laptop rebooted, and the external display is not displaying correctly. How can I fix this?

The monitor has never had problems until immediatly after the update. The monitor attempts to display 1920x1080, but is offset. Part of it is off the screen, and is not horizantally long enough to fill the screen anyway. (Black bar on left side).

Bootcamp Trial

Booted into Windows 7 64bit

Monitor works fine, highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024.

Tried to set Mac resolution to 1280x 1024, works, but this is noticably less resolution than I had originally, before the update.

Specs

Retina Macbook Pro

LG external monitor: FLATRON W2343T

Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor

Thanks for any help you can provide.

My MacBook Pro will be up for an upgrade in a year or so. After this experience with this issue in particular I am contemplating opting for an update from a different manufacturer. I do not understand how a company can disregard its customers so badly. I heard someone from Apple affirm sometime ago: "...It just works..." Well Apple, this time is not working. This discussion panel is hosted by your company. If your moderators can read it, I am sure sure your technical support personnel is well aware about this problem. I have even spoken about this issue with them. Can you display signs that you really care and give us an update when you think you are going to address this problem?

Thank you Apple.

GUYS, I FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME

Obviously, it depends on if your monitor supports it, but I switched from using VGA to using DVI and the black bar went away. I am NOT using an apple cord or adapter for my DVI connection (I have a DVI setup with my Cintiq and I just switched my monitor to that to test it out).

Anyways, if you have the option to try using DVI, I think it will fix your problem.

rMBP 15" 10.8.5 clean install

Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

Nec LCD2690UXi

Monitor native is 1920 x1200 but woud show up as 1600x1200 so stretched ie screen was stretched off the right side of the external display.

I tried everything, pram, trashing system files, clean install, new dvi cable, NEW mini displayport dual link adapter, different thunderbolt ports, reset monitor, recalibrated monitor, rebuilt icc profiles via color sync utility, hours on the phone with 1 and level 2 apple tech and nothing fixed it.

This fixed it. I selected a different (incorrect external monitor profile for the nec ie Adobe 1998) and then hit detect displays. Bingo, fixed. It showed a light grey background color (not what my laptop displays). I mirrored displays and the light grey background appeared on the laptop. I restarted the laptop and it fixed the problem.

I just went from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4 and couldn't get a signal to my external monitor ...until I did this:

Go to system preferences, displays, uncheck the 'show profiles for this display only'

then click on 'Adobe RGB (1998)', hold option, click 'detect displays' and BINGO. My monitor is working.

Macbook pro laptop went a funny colour but then I could just click back to Color LCD and hey everything seems to be working ...so far. Hope this helps some of you.

I think the Timing of the VGA Signal at 1920 x 1080 Resolution or the Communication Timing between Mac and Monitor has changed (or is wrong)...

Im using the original Apple Adapter (Display Port to VGA) connected to a Mac Mini Early 2009 and a 10 Meter VGA Cable to connect a Samsung SyncMaster BX2440 Monitor.

10.8.3 -> everything Fine. Update to 10.8.4 -> black Bars right and left. (10.8.5 same issue)

But - If i use a 2 Meter VGA Cable everything works fine with the same Adapter and the Monitor is recognized as SMBX2440.

Switching to the 10 Meter Cable after it works with the 2 Meter Cable without a reboot works fine too.

Reboot .... you know (black Bars)

Apple please fix that Problem.

And please give us some Awnsers like "Working on it" or "Dear Customers whe can't solve that Problem -> get a DVI Adapter" or "please use Windows on a Bootcamp Partition" ;-)
