Keynote files deleting after update to 10.8.4

I performed a small edit to a Keynote file today after updating to 10.8.4 last night (used the combo updater). The file crashed during a presentation and I though "no big deal, I'll just re-open it." When I went to find it, it was completely gone. Vanished.

I booted up Time Machine back at the office, restored the file, and chalked it up to some fluke. Then I edited a different Keynote file. It kept popping error messages about not being able to locate media files and I eventually closed it. Again, I went to find the orginal file to re-open and it too has dissappeared. This time, Time Machine wouldn't even let me restore it from a backup.

I ran disk utility and it found minor errors in the volume bitmap and free space remaining. So I booted to the recorvery partition and repaired successfully.

I'm up and running again, but my Keynote file is still missing. I'm afraid to open Keynote again for fear of this happening again.

Is there any known issue with 10.8.4 corrupting the file system, particulary when opening and editing Keynote files?

OK, the next thing I'm trying is duplicating all my Keynote Presenations and using the copies instead of the original files. I suspect the problem lies in the way the system calls up previous versions of the file. Maybe by starting with a fresh, new copy of the file (with no previous versions), it won't get confused.

I'll post back with my findings. Hopefully others will too...

Hi there,

hope there are still some people active in this post. I had the same problems few days ago. I thought I was getting Alzheimers. The file just disappeared and also in the MobileBackup. I needed to fix a complete talk over night thanks to this bug and next presentations are coming. This is really a very bad bug. Seriously, people at university are not happy about this....

So, has anyone found a reliable fix yet? I have run the disk utility tool whoch reported no error besides some wrong premissions. The hardware test is also fine. I have a new Mac Pro with Retina and a 512GB SSD...

Also, Is there any way to get a feedback from Apple? I mean, can I use keynote after a next update or do I have to switch to Powerpoint?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks and good luck!

have had exactly the same issue as described by krypttic - three days work lost when keynote file simply vanished with same sequence as above - working ok for a while then the problem dialogue box and .key file disappears from everywhere - managed to bring in older version from time machine - but now, when the problem arises, I go to 'Duplicate' and this seems to return the original file as well as createa new one

this problem happens randomly - but at least once in every work session - so now I'm quitting and copying the file to an external drive every 5 minutes because I've got a deadline to meet

and this is before I've been able to export it as aa quicktime...

have also been having crazy problems with final cut pro x since 10.8.4 updgarde - have reinstalled system software and final cut, deleted pref files, pram-ed - everythign I can think of....

very frustrating - will keep an eye on the discussion to see if anyone comes up with useful info...

I have been experiencing the same problem as well. Started back in May, not being able to include videos in Keynote without it crashing and deleting the file. I went on summer vacation, back to school and day before the big faculty presentation- vaporized. I thought for sure after 3 months Apple would have patched this problem. What are they thinking millions of us are doing right now? Abandoning Keynote because its a nightmare? Are they basically saying thats o.k.? Cuz someone needs to get of their keaster and get this solved as lots of money and reputations are being nailed right now.

Same issues here. Originally the system just had problems trying to locate the file (my presentation) when doing a save. But it would allow me to rename it and save. Eventually though, the entire file was deleted, along with the backup.

My short-term solution was to rebuild the presentation using a different laptop, running 10.8.3.

My long-term solution is PowerPoint.
