How to make logo less prominent on black MacBook

Has anyone had a go at making the Apple logo black or charcoal on the black MacBook? I'm thinking about getting the black model because the matte finish looks a little more durable but the garish looking white logo is a put off.

well, previous ibook was easily taken a part display to change . but macbook display, frame seem to attach by some strong glue instead of screws, or nut like ibook. this is point. you have to open shell, and change apple logo whatever you want. but macbook looks hard. so I don't recommend.

The trim is just snapped on. The fasteners are similar to those that hold on the palmrest on PBs/MBs. If you take your fingernail and pull up on it it will pop off. Pull up on the screen side. The easiest place to start is midway between the top and bottom of the display trim then just work your way around. Just be patient and it will pop off fairly easily. The trim goes back on the same way. As long as you don't break the trim you can't tell it's been removed.

I would cover the Apple with something removeable. That way you can undo the mod if/when you decide to sell it.
Thanks Duffy. Do you know this stuff through experience?

I agree Christiaan,

this is one of those questions of personal taste and expression where arguments along the "everyone does it" line are really pretty silly. Heck, back in the days of the PB1400 Apple actually made a notebook which came with a lid designed for exactly this sort of personal taste! You could even create your own cover designs for use with it.

I personally don't see the icon on the Black MacBook as at all "garish". Looks pretty fine to me (as I watch my wife typing on hers, while I'm confined to the PBG4 ;-)), even though I'm no fan of loud advertising on products.

My only suggestion , really, is that you find a way of doing it that is a) reversible and b) doesn't involve disassembly.

Cheers

Yeah I've concluded that one way or another it should be relatively easy to tone down the logo. And if I can't get used to the temporary solutions then I'll use a more permanent method when my warranty runs out. Of course I'll be sure to post any photos. 🙂

Hi, Christiaan - Sorry about all of the grief you've been getting around here.

You know, this was an issue that came up quite a few times in the iBook forums over the past couple of years. The linked topic from MacRumors Forums offers some ways to mod the logo that you may like. Be careful, though, as your warranty may suffer...

Well, it occured to me about 1/2 way through this that Christaan was just trolling. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but from his combative replies, and the ultimate outcome of this thread, it was just an elaborate trolling.
Sorry you feel that way Robert. Maybe if you stuck to actual query instead of filling up the thread trying convince the person that their premise is "without merit" then you wouldn't get flamed.
