after updating to 10.8.4 my macbook pro retina boots up in 6 minutes

My Macbook Pro retina boots up very slow (6 minutes) after updating to mountain lion 10.8.4. I already did a clean install, after that the boot up time was 40-50 seconds but immediately after doing the update it boots up in 6 minutes again. when i just bought it it booted up in 20 seconds or so, i would really like it to be that fast again! does anybody know if this is a known bug or is it just me?

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Same here, I have the exact same problem after installing 10.8.4 on my 15" Retina. I've tried resetting PRAM, reinstalling ML from recovery, even restoring from time capsule to 10.8.3 and redoing with combined update. 10.8.3 restore from time capsule was fast booting again, so it's a 10.8.4 thing.

  • When you restart you have to wait for about 30-40 loading spins, then the screen goes grey
  • Mouse is frozen top left, but caps lock works
  • If you plug into an external screen it will detect it and render that same grey screen with the frozen mouse
  • You need to wait 5+ minutes then desktop appears

Guys you are life savers!

After 30 minutes on to Apple support, numerous Time Machine restores, full Lion download/install etc. , the last update from Apple kept stopping my machine booting.

When you indicated the SD card slot, I realised my Nifty Minidrive was still in. After removing it, everything is back to normal.

Thanks for this thread, saved me a long trip with my Mac back to the store!

I had same issues with VERY slow boot up (up to 10 mins) since installing 10.8.4, never had an issue prior to this. Once I removed my Nifty drive the problem went away instantly even though the Nifty drive didn't even have an SD card in it.

I suspect the issue with 10.8.4 relates to SD card slots regardless as people have had issues with a normal SD card slot in the machine, not just Nifty. I'm just surprised that an empty Nifty would have an effect; but it does!

Glad I found this thread as next step was going to be a reinstall!

My Nifty Minidrive was in but was also empty. I'm not sure why it caused a problem as I've also got one in my MacBook Air and I've had no problems with that after the update.

I'll try it with the Minidrive containing the microSD and see if that works. It's just strange that an empty drive causes a problem as there is nothing for it to try and load at startup

Hi all. After upgrading from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4, 3 days ago,I've made a lot of pictures in vacation and imported them through SD slot to my macbook pro, After that, mac boots minimum 10 minutes with grey screen and apple logo + cursor on the left side on the top of the screen. While puting the SD card into the slot and turning it on it boots in normal way%) 100% problem is in hardware deivers bugs! Who knows how to fix that SD-problem instead of recovering system via time-machine?

Oh my heavens, I am so glad I finally found this post. I was having the exact same issue when I had my Nifty MiniDrive plugged in (without an sdcard in it even) and the boot time was about 6 minutes. I had even gone into the Apple Store to speak with a "genius" and his recommendation was effectively to completely wipe and restore. Thanks for posting the info!
