How can I PRINT folders from FCE project files?

Over five years of underwater videography I have accumulated several TB of footage, organized into FCE project files by ocean locale and further sorted by subject matter in "clips" folders in the project files. I use the "log note" field for descriptions, eg scenery, vertebrates, invertebrates, divers.

I understand the product incompatibilities that make my FCE project files unreadable by other software, and I am also beginning to doubt that I can keep my late 2007 MBP running indefinitely. So I want to generate a hard-copy directory to my media drives by printing out the contents of my "clips" folders. While I still can...

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions on how to do this.

FCE was really limited in the ability to do this kind of stuff.

Even FCP-7 requires 3rd party help to do it:

so, other than taking screen shots of your bins and printing those - and possibly using some type of OCR to convert the screen shots into searchable text, I am not sure you have many options.

Would be great to be proved wrong.

Have not gotten far with Terminal: initial attempt to use the "ls -l" command to get at one of my FCE project files led to "permission denied ." So I used the "chmod" command to give myself permission just to read the file. This led to "no such file or directory."

I am less than a novice with Unix, so I may have made a syntactic error in typing the commands. OR Terminal will not recognize a FCE file or directory because FCE won't let it. Tom Wolsky says there is no way to print an FCE Browser file, and he may be including these lower-level methods in that assessment...

Any suggestions for actually forcing Terminal to help me?

Thanks,

Sharon,

"ls -l" only lists the folders & files that are in a folder on the drive, not the contents of a file. This is what the ls command does.

FCE project files are basically the EDL's for the project and pointers to files. You can actually just open up an FCE project file using TextEdit but as you will see what appears is not very readable, at least by humans. You don't need to chmod the file, and imho that will only cause future problems with the .fcp project file itself.
