Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I've been using my desktop like normal (brought to Japan from USA in Feb). Today, out of the blue, everything is in Japanese. I don't want that! For example, when I use SKYPE, the FILE-EDIT-etc. is in Japanese. Even my System Preferences shows each icon with Japanese letters underneath. What happened? How do I get it back to English?
go to "~/ライブラリ/preferences/" from Finder's " 移動" -> "フォルダーへ移動..." menu and delete "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", then relogin or "再起動..." of Apple Menu could solve the problem.

”ライブラリ” means Library,
"移動" means Go
"フォルダーへ移動" means Go to Folder
"再起動" means Restart

Yes! I agree. I need to take the computer to Apple. Yes I'll carry the huge screen computer
to the train station, and then on the train, then change trains, and then walk to the tiny, little
store that's in the basement of a building. Sadly and surprisingly, there is only one place in
Tokyo that takes computers and helps. And I don't live in Tokyo. But of course I will do what
I have to do.

I forgot this is the Mac Pro forum, obviously in the situation you describe a visit to Apple may not be that feasible.
Perhaps the Recovery procedure would help

Hello. I tried to follow the steps you advised. I could only get so far, as the kanji
and kana you offered we're not the same choices on my screen. I've spent hours
here looking, staring, trying to change it back to Englis...on the screen, and so
frustrated. Just dead ended!

When I hit the left button, I get a long list of data, of no help.
Please post that data -- the text, not a screenshot.
It means "unknown circumstances, System Preferences was closed."

This looks like the mixed localization bug which can sometimes be fixed by deleting Japanese from the list in system preferences/language & text/language. But if you cannot open that preference properly of course you are stuck.
Delete it(com.apple.systempreferences.plist) or move it to trash and restarting the Mac could be the solution to open the System Preferences again.
