Retina Macbook Pro Freezing after 10.8.4

Background (Steps Tried):

  • Full Reformat from Recovery System
  • Reset SMC
  • Reset PRAM

I have a latest generation 15" Retina macbook pro that I purchased in February of 2013.

10.8.3 was the most stable operating system I have ever used. I updated to 10.8.4 and the computer began freezing at random intervals throughout the day several times a day. It would happen when I plugged/unplugged HDMI, Thunderbolt, and usb. Even when all 3 were unplugged and I was only using safari, it just would randomly happen.

I thought perhaps I needed to reformat. so I backed everything up, booted to the recovery center, and completely reformatted the computer. It downloaded 10.8.3 from Apple to do the reinstall, and I set it up as a new computer to test. I updated to 10.8.4, and that same day, even with a new OS, it started the freezing again for no apparent reason. I am unable to find any logs about crashes from these random freezings.

I have since restored a time machine backup of my 10.8.3 from earlier last week and it is working FLAWLESSLY with all peripherals and has yet to freeze once. I'm not sure why, but 10.8.4 is a MAJOR downgrade for certain Retina Macbook pros as it appears to take them from full stability to barely even usable.

Just curious if anyone has experienced similar issues with their Retinas or otherwise.

Here too - bought my 15" retina in May 2013 and the cursor freezes periodically. In fact, it's doing it right now as I type this message! Very frustrating.

The "genius" at the Apple Store said they'd need the laptop for a few days to run tests on it. But, who can honestly give up their MBP for a week?

Is this a hardware or software issue?? Fix it already Apple. I think you expect a bit more from a $2400 machine.

I upgraded my MBP 15'' from 2009 just 2 weeks ago from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4 and have the same problems.

The computer freezes randomly when I use Firefox, open the Finder or use PowerPoint or watch movies with VLC.

This freezing stays for about 1 or sometimes 2 minutes, without HD access, memory usage or processor usage.

Sometimes only the application freezes and I can do stuff in other applications, but frequently after playing aroung with other applications also they freeze.

I also tried to delete .plist files, add a clean user account, cleaned up everything with Onyx but nothing helped.

I will try to manually reinstall the combo-upgrade as mentioned some posts before and will let you know the results.

O.K. guys, I tried all the aforementioned steps but nothing helped.

More research in the web took me to the right way, my Crucial M4 SSD was the problem.

I updated the firmware to the newest and suddenly the problems are all gone!

So maybe some of you may try this approach, but unfortunately the guys without SSD have to search another solution.

I found problem is using Nvidia card. When I use gfxCardStatus and force the system to use Intel 4000 HD (built in card) , it's ok. Maybe firmware error or hardware error with Nvidia card. I tried to use bootcam with windows 7 installed, Nvidia card with latest driver, the system freeze many times. In OS X whenever GPU change to Nvidia, the system freeze. I also tried 10.8, 10.8.2, 10.8.3 and get the same problem.

Me too..

MBP Retina Display 13", SSD 128GB

just bought it in the middle of July 2013, not even a month until now...

works perfectly fine for my few early days (i didn't check my OS X Version), then after a few days, i tried to migrate my files from my old macbook Unibody 2009 (silver alumunium body but not macbook pro), using Time Machine and migration assistant and after that, directly updating my OS X into 10.8.4.

when everything is finished, i found some issues, such as:

before using migration asistant+update to 10.8.4:

1. no issue with USB

2. i can use my external hard drive with no problem at all, i have 3 external HDD with 160GB for software, 1TB for back up documents, and 640GB for Time Machine.

after using migration assistant (time machine)+update to 10.8.4:

1. freeze for 4-5 seconds after inserting USB Flash disk, SD Card, havent try the tunderbolt

2. my External HDD is readable on the Disk Utility, but not showing up in Finder. (i have Paragon Driver installed from the first day i have my MBP)

*problem no.2 was solved when i formatted my 1TB back up HDD and change the format into Mac OS Journaled, because i still have the file on my old macbook so i decided to format the HDD, but the 160 GB External HDD still couldnt be read.

untill now, i'm still don't know which one is the problem, is it the time machine+migration assistant or the 10.8.4 update.

i'm going to re-install the mountain lion OS X and see if everything goes back to normal.

thanks

Hi,

I got exactly the same problem : when I switch to integrated card (Intel HD 4000), no problem, but if I switch to the discrete card (Geforce GT 650M), some application would freeze my MacBookPro Retina (so I've to force shut down).

The applications that cause such a trouble, seems to be the one using OpenGL Shaders : so basically most of 3D or video applications ...

I installed OSX 10.9 beta 1 (Mavericks), and everything was working, until I upgraded to beta 5 or beta 6. Then the same problem occured again.

Let me know if you found a solution. Thank you !

I am having this issue too. Often when I run something (like Parallels) that causes a switch to the GT650M, the screen freezes and I have to reboot. Recently I stopped using Firefox and this stopped happening for 3 weeks. Then I started using Firefox again, and 1-2 days later the machine froze. Maybe Firefox is using the OpenGL Shaders? Why do you think that is the issue?
