Installing Canon i80 Printer Driver

I am trying to add the Canon i80 printer driver. I downloaded the Mac OSX driver from Canon and installed it however when I go into the printer setup and try to find the i80 driver from the drop down list it doesn't appear. I tried to install it again but it still does not show up. I have the Macbook and am a new Mac user and am not familiar with where Tiger would put the newly downloaded driver. I know it installed but can someone tell me where to go from here. I don't want to use a Gimp driver. Thanks.

Hello Art,

The driver installation copies the files to the ./Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter folder. (The ./ refers to the root level. This is generally whatever you have called the HD icon, ex Mac HD. Don't look in your user folder/Library folder).

Assuming you are connecting via USB (I know that Bluetooth is also supported) the printer should appear in the Default Browser view of the Printer Browser (System Preferences > Print & Fax > + ) and show the connection as USB. When you click on the link the Print Using field of the Printer Browser should change to Canon IJ Printer.

If the Print Using doesn't change to Canon IJ Printer, open the utility Canon IJ Printer Utility (./Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities) to ensure you can connect to the i80 and run the maintenance option. If this does work then go back to the Printer Browser and see if you can add the printer using the Canon IJ Printer option.

Thanks for some good info everybody. I was able to use my Canon i80 by connecting the printer to my Macbook via USB. My initial intention was to print via my network, where the Canon i80 is connected to my Windows PC. I was able to set up my Epson 1270 with no problems. For some reason the Canon is not cooperating when trying to set up network printing. If I have to use the Gimp driver, what would the compatible version be for the i80 printer? Thanks.

Yes, the i80 is there but it is a Canon driver meant for direct connection to the printer. When you connect to a Windows share this driver will not function correctly so you are better of using one of the provided Gimp drivers.

Art, your best solution would be to get a USB hub and connect the Mac and PC and i80 to it. Then you can use the Canon driver and you don't have to worry about the PC being on to print. Or the i80 also has the option to interface via Bluetooth through the purchase of the Canon **-10 Bluetooth Adapter. This unit fits neatly into the front of the printer and would allow you to print without having to connect a cable.
