Something about Mail

It all happened today (06/11/2103).

There are something wrong with Apple Mail on both my iMac and MacBook Air.

I can see the first two lines from preview, but the body became blank when I selected it. (Please see below image for an example). User uploaded file

When this happened, I have to quit Apple Mail, and re-open it. And this issue occurs very frequently.

Any idea the cause of this issue?

Please help me out.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.

Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.

Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:

~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.

A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.

Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.

Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Hi, Linc Davis

I have a new input for you; wondering if it will help.

Generally, my Apple Mail works normal, unless I select the messages in a specific mailbox.

Please see below images for comparison

Apple Mail works normal:

User uploaded file

Apple Mail failed load contents:

User uploaded file

As you can see, both mailboxes are from iCloud, but only when I selected the message from Sovereign mailbox will initiate the problem.

In this case, will it still solve this problem when following your solution?

Hi, Davis

I did what you suggested above, but the issue is still there.

I think only happened when I checked this kind of emails from this specific sender.

But I did not have this issue before. In the past, I could view the emails from this sender without any problem.

After I check this specific emails, my Apple Mail become lagging, and all my other email conetent become blank (unreadable). Also, my fan runs like crazy (very loud).

All I have to do is quit Apple Mail, and try not to check those emails from that sender.

Do I have any other opinion?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Hi, I went to Gensis Bar, and followed your instruction above. After that, the problem has been solved, but only for a little while. The probelm came back after few minutes.

Then, the Apple stuff gave me some suggestions:

1. Re-install operating system, the Mountain Lion. I did, but the problem still there.

2. Create a test admin account to see if there problem still occur. The answer is yes. Even with the new account, the problem still there.

I then tried some other mail clients like Thunderbird, and Airmail. Everything is smooth. It seems this issue only occurs on Apple Mail.

** So far I only found out that this issue happened when selecting the emails from one specific sender! Unfortunately, that email is business related, a notification from a US bank. I cannot overlook it, or not reading it.

Wondering if you have any other solution?

This is a bug in Mail triggered by receiving a password-protected PDF as an attachment, and perhaps in other ways. There seems to be a workaround, though I haven't tested it myself.

Download and run the free application TinkerTool (not "TinkerTool System"), select the Applications tab, and check the box marked

Don't display contents of attachments inline

Then relaunch Mail.
