kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

gfxCardStatus will not help you if you want to use an external display. The discrete graphics system is required when you use an external display. Programs like VMWare Fusion will also warn you that they are not designed to work with gfxCardStatus. I also found that even if you set the graphics card to integrated, the system will automatically switch to discrete on certain occasions (usually when quitting or launching applications).

If you never need an external display, it may be possible to completely kill the ability to switch to discrete graphics, but the current incarnation of gfxCardStatus doesn't do that.

In System Preferences and Energy Saving you can disable automatic graphics card switching too which means it will always use the discrete card. From what I understand the problem happens when the graphics card in use switches. I'm trying this out to see if it makes my MBP reliable. So far so good but it's early days yet.

If you use the discrete card, in my experience you will have kernel panics. The panics aren't always related to switching between discrete and integrated. Integrated graphics alone are unaffected by the malfunction. I suspect there's a thermal condition (specific chip temperatures) related to the panics. In my case, the panics tended to happen when the machine had cooled off a bit (was idling) and then suddenly started doing something more intensive.

If using discrete only would fix this, then people who use external displays would never have problems are they are always running with discrete graphics.

I had mine repaired -> no problems after that.

Ah ****. Was hoping it would be OK as I use an external monitor.

The thing that gets me is that I'm certain I never had this issue with a year of using Lion but as soon as I switched to Mavericks the problem started. There must be some way of managing this better in software.

It definitely became an issue for me since moving to Mavericks; previously it might crash once every few months but now it happens multiple times daily.

The biggest culprit is my external display and iMovie. I'm finding that if I unplug my monitor and run gfxCardStatus to turn off the discrete graphics, then I can run iMovie long enough to import videos from my camera and do a little bit of work.

Unfortuantely, the frequent panics are slowly corrupting my iMovie database so this really isn't a long-term solution.

iMovie constantly crashed on me until I git rid of a few third party kernel extensions (listed at the top of my console log) now it seems fine. The thing that seems to being on my kernel panics is using Chrome or Pixelmator

Anyway, I chatted with Apple online the other day and they recommended resetting the SMC

and the NVRAM (Used to be known as PRAM)

Since I've done this I've not had my MBP reset, but that was only 2 days ago.

It may be worth trying this to see if it helps, especially if you have a repeatable method of triggering the reset.

Mine seemed to be when using Pixelmator, but I've not managed to set it off again since I carried out those steps.

So just an update on my situation which did not come out like I expected. I'm being footed the bill due to just being out of warranty 5 months. I talked to the Apple store "Genius's", the manager on duty at that store at the time, Apples online website support (instant messaging), from there got referred to THEIR lead advisor (who has as much capabilities as a Apple store manager, but claimed he wasn't able to do an out of warranty repair like an atual store manager can). That lead advisor talked to the store I took my laptop to, to see if there was anything they can do for me because after all ***I'm only standing ground believing that I shouldn't have to pay for the repair since I have taken my laptop in for the same exact problem while in warranty, just wasn't given the correct resolution*** If that wasn't the case then I would honestly probably just purchase the part for the $320 that they are asking. After the advisor talked to lead genius at the apple store I talked to, he recommended that the advisor talk to or put a request in to talk to an engineer at apple who would actually be physically doing the part replacement for me. He put the request in and days later got an answer that of course I did not agree with. They didn't believe I deserved the part either. So the next thing I did was write a letter to Apple corp. I feel like it probably won't do anything but if I get a response I'm going to fight till I turn blue.

After this my only bet is to take it to a whole different apple store, and hopefully find a manager who understands and is looking at the situation from my perspective. This solution here is really the only one that I think will/can work. Apple store managers can grant the free repair - they have the ability to do so. It's just finding the one that will.

I have already gotten my logic board replaced free of charge this summer from the mentioned program, but ever since I upgraded to mavericks, i keep getting these freezeups. Resetting the SMC and PRAM seem to stem the tide, but intensive applications will just bring it back. I can't play any games for example 😟. They all crash and freeze the UI after a certain time. I have tried 3 games so far, and it happens for all of them. It also happens for Safari, so I've had to switch to firefox, and keep my graphics card on discrete always. There goes all the battery improvements..

I really can't believe I've gotten so screwed on a nearly $2k laptop from apple, over and over again. I've had macs since childhood, but I don't think my next one will be an apple.

Please let me know if you find a more permanent solution than SMC and PRAM resetting. Sincerely,

Urgh, that's not great news.

I've just had mine crash on me too, so the SMC/PRAM reset is only a temporary fix.

Will get back onto Apple later today to see what they suggest next.

After another chat with Apple they pointed at me this page for trying to identify the cause of a kernal panic.

This ended up with me to installing Mavericks on an external drive to see if it would still crash in that situation. Obviously it did.

I've also reseated my RAM and it's still no good.

My next step is to try restoring my Lion install from Time Machine to the external drive to see if it still falls over with that. I suspect it won't.

Once I've done that I can go back and chat with them again and see what they suggest. I suspect it'll be to take it in and be stunned by the price of a logic board replacement.

That doesn't sound good. I have been reading around, and some users are suggesting a clean install of Snow Leopard to potentially fix the problem, or at least have a mac book pro earlier than 2011 work fast. (I'm not sure such a downgrade is worth it though, I really was beginning to like icloud.)

The external drive test shows that it is probably not your installation nor your hard drive causing the issue..

I'm assuming your crashes have come back since resetting the SMC and RAM? Are they Kernel Panics or just the freeze up where you can move the mouse but nothing else? The latter came with Mavericks after a logic board replacement fixed *most* Kernel Crashes for me.

(Logic board may cost several hundred $).

I've not had much issue with the speed of Mavericks. Having an SSD tends to make the Mac quick anyway.

However permanently downgrading to an earlier OS isn't an option for me I think. My Aperture library has been upgraded for the latest version which I believe is Mavericks only.

Yeah 2 days after resetting SMC and NVRAM it started kernel panicking again.

If I'm going to spend hundreds on fixing it I'd want to know it was fixed for sure, otherwise it's not worth it.

I can't afford a new Macbook (Mainly because the retina display has pushed the price up astronomically) and I'm not sure a second hand MBP would be any better, or at least I wouldn't know what to go for. 2011 ones seem to have problems with the AMD graphics card from the brief check online and early retina displays seems to be problematic as well if you get a screen manufactured by one of the 2 suppliers.

A PC is definitely not an option. The experience I have at work with PCs is many times worse than I've ever had with my Mac.

I sometimes wish I'd kept my Core2 2009 MBP. That was a solid dependable machine. Oh well, let's see what I can do to fix what I've got.
