kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

I'm pretty bummed out myself. 😠 The kernel panics surfaced on my 2010-MBP around Mar/April this year, after Apple's 3-year-limit, based on my purchase date.

This effectively means:

  1. I purchased a computer from Apple that had shipped with an inherent problem that would surface later due to a defective part.
  2. Apple discovered this fault, and yet did not make any attempt to inform or contact owners about it so that it could be rectified.
  3. Through no fault of mine, I now own a computer that I am unable to depend on for my work and daily use.
  4. This also affects its resale value, as I was looking to sell this MBP (before this problem occurred) and upgrade to another Apple computer.

As I'm based in Singapore, I doubt the local Apple service centres (that aren't even Apple operated, though they do claim to hire Apple-certified technicians) are going to honour a fix beyond the quoted 3-year-limit, like some have managed to do in US. I've contacted the Apple helpline once. After guiding me through a series of troubleshooting tasks to rule out other issues (pram/SMC reset, etc), I was simply asked to monitor the situation, and call back if the issue persisted. I was a satisfied owner up until the point I learned I'd been sold a lemon.

Mar 25, 2015 8:24 AM in response to kylefromns

Seems like using the Kext Utility to clear and repair my kext permissions and doing a clean boot fixed this issue for me. Only tested for a few hours now but so far so good. Many people get a logic board replacement but I think it may have been a kext issue as every time I upgrade I run into kernel panics at some point. I push my machines to the limit and run into panics every 10 or so minutes when running on "Discrete GPU" only.

Now I can enable automatic switching without any problems. Hope this helps someone.

My mid-2010 15'' MBP has kernel panic GPU related too. Typically one per week, but 4 times the last couple of days. It started when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Maverick. I'm discovering that it's a known issue, but maybe too late for me to have the logic board replaced... although my machine still is fine for my work (except that reboot when I'm working...)

Same problem, updated my flash and java and did a SMC reset. Been couple days and haven't had a panic yet. There is nothing wrong with my graphics card since this problem only exists after updating to Yosemite from Snow Leopard. It's definitely OS related. Had Windows 7 at one time never had a problem playing games and dual screen on 10.6.8. Removed Windows and put Yosemite on the partition instead and bam GPU panic galore. Sad when we have to diagnose and bug fix their products. Try the directions below, I'll repost if I have a problem when I hook up my dual screen but so far so good.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

After a sixth reboot on April 7 evening, I could even not start my mac, it remained on the grey screen for 10 minutes, then stopped automatically.

After some trials, and considering that I had a Time capsule to date, I decided to make a clean install with my 1.6.3 snow leopard DVD, then upgrade to 1.6.8 then directly to Yosemite 10.10.2. I then migrate all I had my time capsule (longest step - 10hours).

I finally got a 10.10.2 'new' mac with all my files and applications, perfect. I upgraded to 10.10.3 after that. Not reboot at all today. So far so good.

I hope the pb is now solved with the clean install I did. My mac isn't slower than with mavericks, except with Word and Excel - seconds to start, or open the finder with 'open ...'

I just started using Logic and getting these panics now... started looking into it, only to find that this has been an issue with our MBP for quite a while and Apple is discontinued fixing it for free. This laptop is not that old and I paid quite a bit for it, I'm really depressed that I can't switch to using Logic Pro because of this. I don't know if the logic board is the culprit or if its OS related or what..there is so much conflicting information out there. But depressing nonetheless. I don't really want to even buy a new laptop, never mind that I shouldn't have to, but I don't want to because I like my matte screen. Ad $800 to fix their piece of junk hardware is completely horse crap.

Dec 10, 2016 7:55 AM in response to kylefromns

just wanted to thank the contributors of this thread for the info. i was having GPU kernel panics (below) over the past month

*** Panic Report ***

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f8ad6fbd5): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 2 0 a0 99 0 8 5 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00137310: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0x103e00000 0xffffff91f9cd3000 0x0e7150a2, D3, P0/4\n"@/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphic sControl-3.12.9/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

...

a few insights on this post were made about removing 3rd party kernel extensions, of which i have had three listed on all of my kernel panic reports:

loaded kexts:

com.avast.AvastFileShield 3.0.0

com.avast.PacketForwarder 2.1

com.intel.kext.intelhaxm 6.0.3

com.apple.driver.AudioAUUC 1.70

com.apple.driver.AppleHWSensor 1.9.5d0

com.apple.driver.AGPM 110.22.0

...

i removed them all (after googling for how to "load/unload mac kernel extensions"); in order to unload the Avast PacketForwarder extension, i needed to uninstall avast, and to get rid of the Intel one, i had to use the Intel HAXM installer.

anyways, after finally getting all three kernel extensions unloaded, i rebooted, and i haven't had a kernel panic happen in the last week (i double checked to make sure they were still unloaded on reboot).

so yeah, for me the fix definitely was removing/unloading third party kernel extensions. thanks to the posters in this thread for those insights/suggestions!

one quick note: i unloaded the Avast extensions first, and that didn't solve the problem, so i then unloaded the Intel one, and now the problem is gone; it's possible it was just the Intel one causing the issue to begin with (and it might be safe for me to have Avast again), but i'm just happy to have it resolved.

kernel panic, looks GPU related
