kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

just to update -- with no one down here in the republic wanting to help me out, (without forking over cash) i headed up to belfast. the only official apple store on this island. they were super helpful there! they ran the VST, which i got to see. those big FAILED letters popped up on the screen. my macbook is nearly 4 years old at this stage, but there's some EU consumer law to cover it. they replaced the logic board for free! though the first board they put in, failed a VST, so they had to order a second one. got my mac back today. there's 90 days warranty on this, so hopefully it just stays fixed. super delighted to have my mac fixed for free, after all the dead end hoop jumping i did down here. it's disgraceful that apple ireland did not want to help out, and i had to go to another country, essentially, to get this sorted.

Mar 15, 2014 2:03 PM in response to kylefromns

My local Apple service outlet fixed this problem for me - for A$39. The issue first begain to raise its head in mid 2013. I took it to a Genius Bar when I was interstate in October but they couldn't find a problem. When it got worse one week ago - restarting almost every time I changed screens - i found this thread, so thought I'd come back with the solution (for me) to the exact problem in the initial post, for a mid 2010 MBP15".

First time I went to the store they ran a diagnostic that showed a software error which I wasn't content with, so she looked further and decided it was an operating system problem. So she installed a new OS, and now, 3 days later, my MacBook is still running like new.

Now I did show her this thread and the 'known issue', and left the lappy with her for just an hour, so I am assuming that was all she did. But $39, yes please!

Apr 9, 2014 7:16 AM in response to kylefromns

As a followup - after waiting 6 months I ended up eventually bringing this back to another Apple store.

My first experience (October 2013) was pretty much the out-of-warrenty story and you would need to pay for this. At a different store, they took into consideration it wasn't all that far out of AppleCare (September 2013) when I first brought it in and offered to cover it.

I'm glad they decided to do this, it would be nice if Apple had an official policy that would make it easier for store owners to make this choice. Honestly, even if they offered to cover half the cost would make the option to repair a hardware defect that much easier...

Can anyone help me on this?

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Good luck,

Clinton

On another thread on this subject, serveral users have suggested two different novel approaches for MacBook Pro 6,2 2010 that have failed the VST test:

• One is to have a re-balling service work on your motherboard, and once the graphics chip is removed, replace it with a new part before re-soldering. This can cost around US$200 complete.

• another is to make a setting change in a .plist file to force all graphics writes to main store. IF your Mac has FAILED the VST Test, this seems to improve stability.

EU purchasers look here! Old thread I know but thought I'd add my two cents to hopefully help others. I am in the UK and have had this very issue and as an IT tech myself had exhausted literally every possibility other than a new logic board. Today I took my MBP to my nearest Apple store and their Genius Bar after making an appointment a week earlier. After stating the issue and running the tests in store and requesting the VST, my MBP failed instantly. Now, obviously, my MBP is nearly a year out of warranty yet as I am in the EU (This applies only to everyone in the EU! Sorry cousins across the pond) there is consumer law to protect our purchases for up to 6 years from date of delivery assuming the fault was there initially when the item was first received. The bill was £418 for a new logic board but due to the EU consumer law aforementioned by me and another Irish poster earlier in this thread, these repair fees were waved. Turnaround is about a week and I should collect my MBP next week all sorted free of charge. Manager of the store and staff members very helpful and have given my opinion of Apple a new lease of life and the first helpful involvement of the UK being in the EU. If any EU members have paid for this repair you should surely be entitled to a refund as the store you will have undoubtedly visited knows of this fault and it falls under Apple's QAP (Quality Assurance Program) and the EU consumer law. The following link outlines this law: https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ Take particular note of point 1. in the fine print. In the EU you will be covered for this fault until 2016 unless the law changes in the meantime. Hope this helps anyone in the same boat as me, unable to afford a replacement LB or MBP. Thanks Apple and thanks EU.

i notice that the error that was daily the last period , perhaps is related when i connect the SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER T240HD, on the dvi.

doens anyone know if the graphic card can't handle that screen ? or anything else?

Nov 20, 2014 4:41 PM in response to kylefromns

I resume this old topic.

As you can imagine, I hold a 15-inch Mid 2010 MBP. It was a company laptop that I redeemed when I quit the job.

At the beginning the GPU KP was rising few times per day, one or two times. Then, updating OS X to the newer versions, it started doing it more frequently, until now, with Yosemite, which happens *several* times per day.

Just in last hour it happened 7-8 times! Almost every 5-10 minutes.

I've even installed gfxCardStatus, setting it in order to use only the integrated card, and so far (just one hour) it didn't happen again.

But it's getting *really* frustrating. I'm a computer science student and a developer, and of course I cannot work with a terminale that crashes every 10 minutes!
And of course I'm out of warranty since one year.

I read all the thread and I've seen some comments regarding the possibility of getting a new logic board without paying anything, but I didn't get the 'exact' procedure to follow.

As far as I understood, I should show the TS4088 issues to an Apple Center, and ask for a VST test (right?), but...then?

What should I say to them?

My biggest concert is that right now I'm in Lisbon, Portugal (I'm from Italy), and I'm not sure that here (but in Italy too) they would have the right knowledge for this problem. Without considering that probably I won't be able to explain the problem in a proper way, due to language issues...so I would like to know exactly what I should say in order to not get them doing any 'meh' faces.

Any help from those guys who have been able to fix this problem once and for all?

Thanks a lot for your support.

Cheers,

P.

I had lengthy discussions online with Apple Chat, tried many different things suggested by them.

Eventually I made an appointment to see a Genius at an Apple store.

They connected the laptop to their network and booted the online diagnostics. This tested the machine and failed on the VST quite obviously.

They said they would get it fixed with no charge.

As simple as that.

What's even more amazing for me is that the machine wasn't even in my name as I bought it second hand and the previous owner didn't de-register it.

It was under 3 years old at the time, so that may have been why they fixed it for free.

However it seems your experience will vary depending on the Apple store, which isn't that great. They should be consistent.

Best of luck.

Dec 10, 2014 2:30 AM in response to Eddy5

I'm using gfxCardStatus for more than two weeks, forcing the use of the integrated card, and no more crash happened since then.

I can say the problem is resolved, but it isn't. It's quite awful that I can't use my graphic card on my laptop. But at the same time, I don't want to risk the technical assistance before being sure that I can get it for free.

I had rumours about some kind of class action rising up there in USA for this problem...is this true?

kernel panic, looks GPU related
