kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

i tried doing all of that, and it didn't work. i first tried an archive & re-install. that didn't work. then i tried to boot into SL off an external disk. that didn't happen either. finally, i wiped the drive and did a clean install of SL. nope. wouldn't let me do it. it only accepts the ML, which i am guessing is because of the firmware upgrade.. it's so frustrating! my mac worked perfectly until then.

Jan 24, 2014 6:15 AM in response to dirtyghettokid

Like Eddy5 says, you can do a fresh install of Snow Leopard, if you don't have a backup that you can revert to. I always keep my hard drives partitioned, so when I upgrade my OS, I can also have the previous version available with a simple reboot. I did this with 10.7 and 10.8, but since they felt awkward and unreliable (I didn't know the panics were related to hardware), I just kept on using 10.6.8 while keeping a Lion partition "in case I need it" (for XCode).

In December, I finally decided I needed some software that no longer worked with Snow Leopard and that's when I discovered that it was a hardware issue. While waiting, I kept on using 10.6.8 and had no issues.

Make a backup of what you have (use Firewire Target Disk Mode with another Mac to make the backup to prevent panics while doing it). Then install a fresh Snow Leopard and migrate back your applications and data onto that one (may involve some manual work since the migration assistant probably isn't designed to go back in time).

As long as Snow Leopard is OK for you, you can have a 100% reliable machine without getting it repaired.

P.S. You can also do the install on another Mac onto an external hard drive... Firmware shouldn't prevent you from installing an older OS - I think the issue is something else.

dirtyghettokid-

Any MacBook Pro later than 2009 models probably cannot boot from the last 10.6.3 "Full Retail" DVD.

2010 and later shipped with a later version, which is only available from the "shipped in the box" DVD, or a "replacement" DVD available from Apple for a nominal fee.

Firmware upgrades do not tend to lock out earlier Mac OS X, but having an older version of MacOS X installed DOES tend to lock out earlier versions.

So, I too have experienced the dreaded GPU kernel panics and I went to the genius bar today. The VST test failed and they determined I needed a new logicboard for my mid 2010 mac book pro. I am literally 15 days out of the warranty and I was told I would have to pay $310 for the repair but that she would talk to the manager too. I explained that it was a known issue and that I hoped Apple would take care of it. She said I had three years to deal with it, but I obviously did not have 3 years to deal with this since the kernal panics began only last year when I installed Moutain Lion.

Anyway, she talked to the manager and they split the difference with me, since I'm just out of warranty, and I'm going to pay $155 for the repair. I've always loved Apple, but this left a bad taste in my mouth from a customer service standpoint since it's a known hardware defect and I'm barely out of warranty. But, I'm still happy to at least save half the cost as I know some people have had no luck at all.

Feb 17, 2014 9:19 AM in response to Jhunter1

Interesting tractic. I have since replaced my MacBook Pro and am debating if I should try to bring it in again to get "fixed" (I use this term loosly since it's a hardware defect in the design). As a laptop, as long as the accelerated video board is disabled it seems to work fine.

If they are willing to fix it for half-price then I might consider it, otherwise I'll keep it for occasional use as a Mac-based laptop.

Feb 24, 2014 11:17 AM in response to pips1971

There is a definitive test for the Latent Defect which was built into certain MacBook Pro 6,2 units.

It is called the VST Test, and it takes only a few minutes for your Apple Authorized Service Provider to run. The result of this test is a huge banner on the screen that says "PASSED" or "FAILED".

If you have been given a replacement part with the Latent Defect, it will show "FAILED" and should be replaced again.

--------

There are other failures that can occur. These sometimes occur from the computer getting much too hot or just random Hardware failures. These are NOT detected by the VST Test. These failures would NOT be covered by the recall progam.

There's something wrong with your RAM. SInce you've a Retina model, and a new one, with soldered RAM, you're going to have to take your machine to an Apple Store or an AASP and have the logic board replaced.

Print out a copy of your kernel panice and take it with you.
