kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

Here is the latest report:

FWIW, I'm in the same area as you, and went to the store at Partridge Creek. The only trouble I had was getting them to actually run the VST. But when they finally did, and my machine failed it, they still authorized the repair on their Quality (Assurance?) program even though I was about 4 months past the 3 year limit.

Excuse my double post here, but as I posted the first I went ahead and scheduled my appointment with the same Apple store. I'm a month or two further out of warranty than you are, except I had no such luck in getting them to do it for free like you did. Did they offer you this right off rip, or did you have to do some convincing? I had no luck with the Genius I spoke with, and he ended up offering to let me talk to the manager which of course I had no problem doing. After speaking with the manager and getting no where for a bit he ended up meeting me halfway and said he'd pay for half the bill if I shipped it out to Depo which was roughly $323 dollars, so I'll be paying about $160 out of pocket.

I was just curious what you did to convince them or if it was the boob factor overall, haha.

Jan 15, 2014 9:56 PM in response to hazend

They certainly didn't make the offer straightaway. I don't remember all the details of the conversation, but I do remember being very patient and courteous (VERY patient, especially when the Genius said this is not a known issue for MY computer, meaning because its Applecare was expired), but also sticking to my guns that IF it was due to a defect, I shouldn't have to pay even if it was out of Applecare. The Genius was never going to agree to that but the manager he called over did. I'm really not sure why.

So anyway, I'm sorry they didn't treat you the same way. It seems very random and capricious, especially if you had the VST results showing failure.

Jan 15, 2014 10:02 PM in response to Liz A.

I was very patient as well, I did make it known that I was aware of the issue these were having right away. I let him run the pointless Hardware Diagnostic test on it first, which everything passed. Then he offered and asked if it was okay to run the VST which I of course said please do. From there after the test initialized and actualyl started, it IMMEDIATELY failed. I thought it was hilarious because as it was about to start he was like "Okay now, this test will take up to 10-15 minutes so be very patient with me as it runs through its test." And then BAM - Fail. I already knew it would since the Somerset store did the same procedures..

Andrew was the manager I talked with and ended up with the resolution/outcome that I got. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I feel like it's the best I'll get considering the responses I've been given from everywhere else. And frankly, I'm tired of trying.

Thank you again for your post otherwise I probably wouldn't of had tried that store, even though the day before this my buddy at work mentioned she had close ties with a manager there - maybe I should've waited for her to talk to that person to get a better outcome, huh? 😝

Jan 15, 2014 10:09 PM in response to hazend

The manager I talked to was a young man named Devon or Devonne, so maybe it was just the luck of the draw, or maybe the higher-ups weren't happy with the decision to give me a freebie and clamped down since then.

Or, it might not be a matter of store policy at all, just who you talk to, and you might as well have better luck at Twelve Oaks.

This is late but, I bought my Macbook back in Feb. 2011 and this problem has occured. I have an appointment tomorrow with the Apple Store. Other than the documents you stated to bring, is there anything else I should know or prepare for? I have a feeling they would try not to service my Macbook and make me pay for it, even though, physically, this laptop is in great shape with the exception of faulty hardware. The Apple store is a bit a ways from my house so I dont want this trip to end with no solution. It has gotten to the point when I cant even use it for 30 mins before it crashes. I just want my laptop back 😟

Jan 22, 2014 9:55 PM in response to mrgeez

Just to report the status of this case, they were running VST many times without getting an error. He was also stresstesting the hw and running VST after. Finally I suggested to run cinebench until it locks up, and run test after. After a few tries, it finally failed the test. Note, that the test results are sent to Apple, and they could only got a logicboard from them for free, if there was a failed test to be referred to. Finally, I had mine replaced for free, even if the test failed a week after my 3year period ended.

Jan 22, 2014 11:52 PM in response to kmeezie

No, it is really straightforward, if the VST fails, and you are in the 3-year period with a macbook mentioned in TS4088. There are some cases, when they wouldn't run the VST, or it won't fail, while the symptoms are straightforward, in this case, I'd suggest them to run cinebench a few times, or run VST immidiately after a restart to provocate failure. And contact them asap to have enough time until the 3year deadline to make it sure, it will be eligable.

Jan 23, 2014 12:46 AM in response to kylefromns

Got my MBP back last night. Took a little while to complete as they found a fault with the Caps Lock key during the post fix testing (It was fine before it went in), but they had the wrong contact details for me. Eventually they got in contact with me.

They've also replaced the top case (aluminum case, keyboard and trackpad) and waived the cost on that too.

I'm personally delighted with the service Apple have provided me, but I also appreicate how frustrating it is for others with the same fault who are having to pay. I know I've been very very lucky.

kmeezie you're within the warranty period so should be fine. I took mine in, they looked at the console logs, saw the faults, then carried out the VST which it failed and promptly arranged for a new logic board to be fitted with no cost. It was very simple and I didn't have to ask them to do anything at all. They just did it.

i have been living with this problem now for over six months.. it's driving me demented, and my macbook will be 4 years old this april.

is there ANY way i can roll my machine back to snow leopard? i tried before, but it wouldn't let me. i got this issue once i'd updated the firmware and OS last july.

does anyone see anything out of the ordinary on my panics? here's one:

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

I hate to keep posting this, but...

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Good luck,

Clinton

yes, i was in contact with apple last summer about this, and they didn't want to know. we don't have an official store in the republic either. i just thought if there was anything i could do myself, i'd do it. i can't afford a new mac. apple won't fix this one, and i can't afford a new logic board for it either. if i could figure out how to roll back the firmware, or SOMETHING.. i'd do it! i've had 4 kernel panics already this morning. i can't get anything done.

kernel panic, looks GPU related
