kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

It's very strange that people are having to pay for the repair and others not. It's very inconsistent approach and something Apple should look to rectify.

Saxifraga, I'd be taking that straight back to the Apple store to get it fixed for free. Especially after having to pay for the repair. The repair should come with some warranty. Mine has 90 days. From PC experience things like that have been down to bad memory, so it could be the Intel graphics card has some dodgy memory.

Jan 7, 2014 12:51 AM in response to Eddy5

In Europe, legislation on product guarantee/warranty varies from country to country. For example in Finland, all products have an expected lifetime based on what the product is and if the product fails during that period, the manufacturer may have to fix it even if it's "out of warranty" (the manufacturer warranty can only extend the default consumer protection). To complicate things, the protection only applies to consumers. If the product was bought by a corporation, the law doesn't apply.

Jan 7, 2014 1:33 AM in response to Eddy5

Thanks for the tips. 🙂

The graphics problems came up at the same time the kernel panics happened.

From not having any more kernel panics I conclude that the faulty motherboard also damaged my RAM.

(Or it may be only a coincidence.)

The Intel chips use normal memory as video ram, so Apple will surly not do this repair free of charge but make some more money from me. Let´s have another appointment with the 'Geniuses'. 😟

Jan 7, 2014 7:05 AM in response to Eddy5

Well it doesn't explain why they did mine for free, since it's definitely out of warranty, and out of the 3-year Applecare (purchased August 2010). And besides, the TS4088 document says that regardless of warranty status, they will fix it free of charge only for 3 years from date of purchase.

Some Apple stores are extending that date, some are not. I agree that this is not how it should be, but it does show that Apple allows managers some leeway for this issue.

Saxifraga, I gather you had the repair (and had to pay for it) and now you have a similar, but slightly different issue? That certainly sounds like your new logic board came with another graphics-related defect, but I'm not an expert.

But I agree with the others, and especially if you had to pay for the repair, there should be a limited warranty attached. Did you try Apple Hardware Test? I would do that and then take it back to the Geniuses, if you can stomach it. Maybe this time it will fail their standard testing.

Jan 7, 2014 7:26 AM in response to kylefromns

This issue drives me crazy, the symptoms are clearly indicating I have TS4088, and it is going worse over time. I've gone to an apple service provider a month ago, when I have one lockup a week or something like that, they were stated, that they stress-tested hardware for hours, but couldn't find any errors. I asked, if they've run specific tests instead of AHT, and the answer was yes. I got 2-3 lockups a day now, and I decided to give it another try yesterday. They have difficulties running the test, but now they are stating that the tests are running, but they get no errors. They will try to test it further to give it a chance (?).

The question is: are they really running VST? What is the duration of typical run of VST? Is it really hours? The symptoms are obvious, and I'm now running out of the 3year period (it was bought on 2010. dec 30.), and I don't want to pay fortunes...

Jan 7, 2014 7:36 AM in response to mrgeez

they stress-tested hardware for hours, but couldn't find any errors.

The overnight stress test does not find the Latent defect mentioned in TS4088.

The VST test takes only a few minutes, and you should ask then to run it while you watch for the remarkable PASSED or FAILED screen at the end.

I have always recommended you go to your appointment armed with a Printed copy of TS4088, as a hedge against, "we never heard of this."

Jan 7, 2014 8:15 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

In my case, it made no difference... they just pulled up the database on my machine and said that "this is not a known issue for your Mac". Apparently, if it's out of warranty, that is what they will get. They won't diagnose or even consider it a possible TS4088 issue without running the VST, and they might not run VST without pressure from the customer. They even researched TS4088 in their system when I first brought the machine to them, and assured me that they would test for this issue. They did not, until I insisted that they run VST, two days later.

Jan 7, 2014 9:21 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

They seemed to be absolutely aware of TS4088, when I mentioned that I have 2010 MBP with GPU Kernel panics, and I want them to repair it for free. They were also very helpful.

Thanks for letting me know it is a short test, I will try to ask them to run VST in front of me.

Cinebench seem to cause restarts reliably, when running opengl benchmark once or twice, if some of you wants to reproduce the fault.

Jan 8, 2014 3:32 AM in response to mrgeez

I have the same issue as people above, and I discovered it 2 months after the 3-year warrenty expired. Now it is getting even worse to the point wher ethe laptop is almost useless. Being a student, i rely heavily on my macbook and I certainly cannot afford a 500$ logicboard nor a new computer.

The worst thing is that this is a wellknown issue for the 2010 productline and to only offer replacments in the first 3 years is a very poor service.

I might have been unlucky, but with several similar experiences with Apple products, this might indeed have been the last penny I invest in the company.

Jan 8, 2014 8:30 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Grant,

you said:

A dozen GPU panics may be a GPU problem, PROVIDED you do not have a lot of graphics-related third-party kexts installed as well. Non-Apple kernel extensions appear at the top of the list of kernel extensions in the panic report.

Blatant Troublemakers include so-called anti-virus software, Virtualization software, and copy-protection software such as Pace support. There are many others.

I have had 4 GPU panics in the last 2 days (since installing Maverick just a few days ago. However, I also had sophos (uninstalled this afternoon) and Pace (leftover from ProTools, which I had uninstalled before installing mavericks but had not removed Pace until this afternoon). Is it possible that those were the culprit and that my GPU is actually ok?

I haven't crashed since I uninstalled those apps, but it has only been since this afternoon. I did try running several graphics heavy processes simultaneously in an attempt to recreate the problem (netflix on chrome, a slideshow on aperture, a movie on iMovie, a movie in QT, and a session in Garage Band), but it didn't crash.

Any input is much appreciated!

Well, I finally bit the bullet. I purchased a new rMBP over Thanksgiving weekend (so sweet!) and now that the traffic at the mall has died down, I put my 2010 MBP back to its original factory config (removed SSD and hybrid drive with Drive Doubler; replaced original 500 GB and optical drive) and brought it in to the Apple Store. I pleaded one last time for a free repair, but it didn't work. My plan is to get the fix and then sell the thing to hopefully recoup some of the cost of the new rMBP.

Maybe at this point in this thread, it might be useful to start a list of Apple stores where there are reports that they will still do the repair for free past 3 years vs. stores, like mine, that will not.

Will not repair past 3 years: Oakridge Mall, San Jose, CA 😠

I agree with the last bit there, however, I don't think you can entirely rule out a store when there are probably about 3-5 different Store Managers per store depending on the volume of traffic the store gets. And also plethora other "Geniuses" there. Although I probably wouldn't be the one to try again in the same store for the same thing, I feel like it'd be too awkward for the chance of running into the same people again. It could be something all the managers/geniuses all have the same consensus on, or one could be more apathetic. We never know.

I will add to the list from my experience -

Will not repair past 3 years: Somerset Mall, Troy, MI.

My next try will be Twelve Oaks Mall - 45 minutes away just to try and gamble at the opportunity.

FWIW, I'm in the same area as you, and went to the store at Partridge Creek. The only trouble I had was getting them to actually run the VST. But when they finally did, and my machine failed it, they still authorized the repair on their Quality (Assurance?) program even though I was about 4 months past the 3 year limit.
