Does apple wipe the data from recycled iPod Touches/iPhones

A friend of mine stored some important data on his ipod touch for quick access. So, one day his ipod became a little damaged and he ended up taking his iPod Touch to Apple to get it fixed. They said they couldn't fix the problem and instead told him that he could give them his old Ipod Touch for money off and that he could buy a new one on the spot. So, he makes this impulsive decision and gives them his old Ipod Touch and walks out with a new one. A year later he realizes after restoring data from the date that he gave his old iPod touch that he had important data like his Social Security nuber still on there, and he can't remember if he still had a password at that time. So the question is, does Apple wipe the data immediately after receiving the old device? He's been worrying big time, worrying that an Apple employee might want to use it and commit identity theft which i believe is unlikely. So do they immediately wipe the data?

Apple should erase all data from your device. However, I can;t find anywhere whaere it says that.

However, I did find this in Apple's recycing webpage

http://www.apple.com/recycling/gift-card/

What happens to my personal data?

PowerON’s data erasure process includes complete data removal. PowerON recommends that you perform a complete backup and data wipe (erasure) of all the information on your old computer. Apple and PowerON have no responsibility for loss or confidentiality of customer data on reused or recycled equipment.

This is the correct link for iPod recycling: http://www.apple.com/recycling/ipod-cell-phone/ It looks like the iPod program is administered by Apple, not PoweredOn which administers the iPhone, iPad, Mac and PC/notebook recycling program so the PoweredOn disclaimer probably does not apply. That said, There probably is little chance that someone at Apple would take data off the device.

As in they wouldn't go through his info.

I had to return my iPad to best buy and they assured me that they had a very strict customer data policy (any place that works on electronics has to have one). DIfferent company I know, but none of them want the scandal of being the source for illicit info sharing.

While I don't know, I'm reasonably sure that part of the refurb process is to do a full wipe and restore, not only for any data that's on there but to verify that the device is working.
