MacBook Air 2013 Windows 7 freezes during installation

Hi there,

I have a new MacBook Air Mid 2013, 13" model (UK region) and am trying to install Windows 7 (via bootcamp) as a second OS.

When holding down 'Alt' and selecting my Windows boot DVD, everything goes OK but it freezes on the inital user input screen (Language selection). Using the same procedure, and same DVD in a Retina MBP, it works OK.

Anyone else seeing this behaviour / have any suggestions?

It turns out this isn't a freeze, but rather the Keyboard and Mouse are unresponsive in the Windows Installer.

It seems when initially re-booting in to the Windows Installer process *DIRECTLY* from BootCamp assistant, the Keyboard and Mouse DO work, however after any subsequent restart, the Keyboard and Mouse are not recognised (such as the restart half-way through installation of Windows 7). External, USB Keyboards and Mice are not recognised either.

So it seems like some firmware glitch perhaps where Bootcamp assistant is setting something when changing the startup disk that otherwise doesn't get set. Most likely this relates to the Haswell chipset in the new MB Air.

First erase any history of trying to install windows.....that means use boot camp or disk utility to delete any windows partitions that you may have created.

Now restart your laptop

from here on:

1)download a windows 7 iso from here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...f-3ca30356fc3d

(This is a legit copy of ultimate from the Microsoft website)

2) start bootcamp and when it asks you what you want to do, check the first two options (create windows 7 install disk and download support media)

let it work...once it is done then quit bootcamp COMPLETELY.

3) start bootcamp again and this time select install support media to the same usb drive

let it work and then quit bootcamp COMPLETELY.

4) start bootcamp and this time select install windows 7. bootcamp will automatically restart your computer into windows setup. From there continue on like normal.

you have to let bootcamp restart your computer (you can't close bootcamp and then restart from the menu yourself...you must let bootcamp do the restart)

your usb drive shouldn't come out of your computer during any of these steps.

Hello All !

Thank you all for your help.

This might be useless, but I'd like to post, very simply, how I fixed the problems. It is or it is very close to solutions given before, but still.
If at least one person benefits from this post it will be worth it.

1- I did not use a USB flash drive. I used a 1to ss external hard drive.

2- after setting up the bootcamp installation( all 3 tickboxes ticked) , once the wizard asks for partitions, I quit, and re downloaded the drivers onto the disk. (tickbox 2 only )

3- I restarted the bootcamp installation 3rd tickbox only.

Then it worked.

Ok, Its very easy to solve.

-Problem: MacBook,MacBook Air brings USB3.0 and windows 7 does not recconize Usb3.0 natively.

-Is USB 3 supported by Boot Camp 5.1?

Yes. See Using USB 3 devices on Mac computers.

Updated response as of December 2016 for Windows 7 installs on Apple computers (laptops and desktops) for those using BootCamp. While this response is aimed more at the Windows 7 installs, Windows 8 versions and later can use this method as well.

BACKGROUND: If you start the BootCamp application within Mac OS, and follow the prompts by clicking the box to download the latest BootCamp drivers (using a Windows 7 iso on the desktop and a formatted USB attached to your Apple laptop/desktop), the install will NOT be able to complete. You will only get as far as the initial Windows 7 install, but on Windows 7 re-boot from BootCamp back into BootCamp, you will NOT have a cursor on-screen (usually at the screen that asks you to choose a language). In addition, your connected wired/wireless mouse and keyboard will NOT work as the Windows 7 BootCamp drivers for the keyboard and mouse will not have been loaded from the previously-created USB. It seems the correct Windows 7 drivers were never, in fact, downloaded; notwithstanding, the BootCamp creation process you did earlier in the process with no hitches.

SOLUTION: To avoid/correct this situation, create your bootable USB as normal using the BootCamp application, but do NOT use the checkbox option to have BootCamp automatically download the latest drivers from the Apple servers. Instead, MANUALLY download the BootCamp driver suite for your particular model device as specified on the table found (scroll down on the page) at:

Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support

Unzip the relevant files to your desktop after download and then copy them over to the root directory of your bootable USB. Then, proceed to use BootCamp as normal by continuing the Windows 7 installation. Your Windows 7 installation will now have the cursor and a working mouse/keyboard to make the appropriate selections and complete the Windows 7 BootCamp process. As a caveat and while not required, using a USB 3.0 and later flash drive (versus USB 2.0) will make your install MUCH faster.
