New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

It is helpful to know what router channels and firmware upgrades help, but only because that will give Apple a better idea of what's wrong and how to fix it in the MBA's (firmware or software).

It is unlikely to be a wired hardware problem. This is because some MBAs work perfectly in some scenarios and because it would appear 2013 MBAs play well with the latest new 802.11 ac TimeCapsules and Routers.

So, from the comments in this exhaustive forum thread, I think Apple should concentrate on it's most recent Airplay Update and the choices the Haswell chip is making about power management.

Hey guys,

I originally started this thread and marked the problem as resolved after switching channels.

BUT It seems i jumped the gun when it worked perfectly for 30 minutes... but then dropped out again. Since then i've been trying all the channels and getting exactly the same story, sometimes i can get up to an hour but mostly not that much.

Not sure if i can change this thread back to unresolved but that i my situation.

Any help would be awesome!

Guys did anyone of you send an email to apple in order to complain about this problem?

I think that if we let apple know of the problem's existence , a fixing update of OS X would surely come out during the next days.

I personally think that this is a problem of new hardware "working under the rules" of older software.

I'm using a D-link DIR-615. Pretty old. The new firmware I got from http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-615-wireless-n-300 -router.

I called support explaining everything I did (change channels, adjust my router to N only, changed MTU, monitored my wifi connection, manually set the IP, erased the network settings and keychain entry to start with a new connection, etc). I asked if I could send the Diagnostic results I got when my laptop lost the connection to someone. The first guy wanted me to come to the store in order for someone to look at it. I kept telling him that this was very frustrating. The next day, someone called me and he was a Senior Technical Advisor. I sent him the Diagnostics and he was the one that found out about the firmware.

Let's face the music. It is product flaw that may affect only a slice of the new MBAs out there. It is not your router. These MacBooks are meant to be travel heroes - not sissies on a diet. Return the MBA if you have this problem if you still have a chance and get new ones until you're happy. Or get a Pro as I did without this nonsense. .

Oh, by the way. Watch out for so called Apple engineers sending you e-mails and wanting you to give information. A snake in the grass.

Good luck!

This *****. I've read everything here, and a bunch of other sites. I am an artist, I'm not technical, and I find a lot of what is discussed here quite daunting. What I know...

I have five MacBooks running in my house, and six iPads (as well as iPhones and whatever other Wi-Fi connected devices are in the house.)

One of my three sons got a MacBook Air yesterday, no different than two other ones I am running. I get Wi-Fi for about sixty seconds, and then it goes away (but shows that it is connected.) After a little while it works again, and then it doesn't again. Maybe five page clicks, then it seems like it dies in the middle of opening a page.

I've made some of the various suggested changes, but haven't tried to download and reinstall the OS.

This *****, like I said. And I'm in Berlin, and the new MacStore "Genius" bar is not staffed with Geniuses.

Right,

I have logged my call in the UK - twice. Here's what has happened:

1st: They had me set up a new Wifi profile (Home) instead of Automatic and set it to the router.

This lasted around 10 minutes longer, but same problem prevaled.

2nd: Colleague reviewed and conferred with other colleagues for 10 minutes who decided the channel on my router needed to be changed and this means contacting my ISP.

Not doing that.

Having found that I can keep the internet stable through keeping Wifi diagnostics on in the background is a temporary fix. If Apple don't release an update within a week, I'll take it back.

BTW for those not aware - Wifi diagnostics are in System Preferences -> Network -> Wifi -> Assist Me -> Diagnostics. The final window will pop up exclusively of the main filepath. Minimise into the dock and leave it there. That should resolve it, as it has done for mine for the last 5 hours. Not ideal, but a sticky plaster until Apple can get their act together. It would look fairly clear to me, though I am by no means technical that the diagnostic program is keeping the connection alive, and perhaps to save battery or power or something it is cutting the connection when it is not monitoring it...

Well, I bought mine yesterday, I spent several hours trying to deal with this (most of which was spent reading this and other threads). It's Saturday here, so and hour ago I ran to the store, and they exchanged it. The new one is working fine.

No idea, but obviously something is hinky. Apple Store exchanged it with a friendly smile, so they're back in my good graces... but that was NOT the out-of-box experience I've come to love from Apple.

Onward, now to deal with MineCraft for the boys...
