dual display vga hdmi issue

I have a mac mini with a dual display set up. One display is output through the hdmi to the apple dvi connector and to the monitor. It seems to work fine. The second display is output via the mini displayport to a vga converter. One monitor is an HP2511x and the other an Acer H243H. It doesn't seem to be a monitor issue because it is always the monitor connected via vga.

The proiblem is the image is shifted left by about an inch. Sometimes it starts ok, but as soon as I log in, and the monitor does an autoconfig it shifts. I also notice that the vga connection displays as a generic monitor, while the dvi picks up the monitor type correctly.

If a single monitor is used it works fine.

The set up menu on both monitors state the recommended is 1920x1080 and 60Hz. Running both from Windoze and linux with this setting works fine.

DisplayConfigX doesn't run properly, complains that powerpc software is not supported. The message is Launch of "DisplayConfigX" failed: the PowerPC architecture is no longer supported. As can be seen from the system information display the mac is Intel.
