How to format new Maxtor external drive?

How to format new Maxtor external drive?

Well, I bought a new Maxtor Onetouch III FW/USB external drive and of course it has a Windows file format. I've erased it, but can't find a way to reformat the drive with Mac OS. I've done this in the past with internal drives, but never an external one. I just don't see an option to format the drive.

In the Disk Utility, click on the drive instead of the disk; the drive is one space above the disk in the column to the left. Selecting the disk does not allow you to change the disk's format between Mac and PC formats, while selecting the drive does.
