Playing FLAC files in iTunes with Windows 7 OS.....is it possible?

Are there any apps or hacks that anyone is aware of that will allow me to play FLAC files in iTunes?

I do not want to convert my FLAC files to another format to use - it would be too difficult to synchronise the tags and song ratings from the mp3 files (or whatever formats itunes supports) back to my ''archived' FLAC files.

Yet I really enjoy iTunes' playlist functions - no other players compare. I am hoping to have the best of both worlds: FLAC and iTunes cataloguing features. A search through the web and these forums makes me think it is not possible.

Any links or suggestions? Or do I need to choose between FLAC and ITunes for realsies?

The fact that FLAC is the lossless format of choice for the music piracy community means that the sellers of digital music will not ever be particularly keen to support it.

Incorrect! Bandcamp, my official digital music source of choice, allows both FLAC and ALAC. And how will supporting FLAC will support piracy? Poppycock.

iTunes is not the sole option. There are alternate players. That play FLAC. And people are always free to choose those players instead. To not slowly lose their audience, Apple must update their product with new features and compatibilities. I use iTunes now, but I may not be using it tomorrow.

I never suggested that FLAC is not used and supported in countless other arenas but that does not change the fact tht it IS indeed the losslees format of choice for the enormous piracy community.

If you want to engage in a debate about what Apple should or shouldn't be doing to "not slowly lose their audience" please take it elsewhere as this is a technical support forum thread.

If you have any further technical questions, the kind that others may benefit from the answers to when searching, I'm sure folks will be happy to chime in and help.

The player has to have decompression code, the "dec" part of the word "codec", for the format you wish to play, either incorporated in the player or as an add-on. iTunes has no FLAC decoder, and to my knowledge there has never been a FLAC plugin that would work with iTunes for Windows. If you need to play FLAC and don't want to convert, you'll need to use a different player.

Regards.

Okay... any suggestions on a FREE player for Macintosh? Don't have the luxury of money at the moment.

Vox is my default player. VLC, Songbird, and Cog are other popular options.

I tried Vox about two years ago. Its tiny window, extremely minimalist design and no way of creating a library turned me off. Has it gotten better? And what of Songbird? Are the devs still making updated versions for newer OS? Many programs I knew don't have new stable releases.

On Windows, You have Winamp, Foobar2000, MediaMonkey and J.River Media Center as the popular players with jukebox capabilities. On Mac, you can try Nightingale. It exists for Windows as well, and also for Linux. It is based on Songbird (which was discontinued in 2013) and, at least on Windows, it has better performance than Songbird did. Nightingale was in fact a response from a comunity of Linux users since POTI Inc. has dropped official support for Linux on Songbird. You can even surf the web with this app. It only supports audio files, including... Uh. FLAC.
