New update for UK users. I ended up paying £159 for a replacement 4S. The good news is that Apple have changed their policy and now, as well as a 3 month guarantee Apple will cover replacement phones you have paid for for 6 years for hardware problems. I only found this out after tons of correspondence an phone calls and visits to the store but it was what convinced me to lay out yet more cash after having 4 replacements in 2 years for different hardware issues. Now I have a working wifi button and when my phone plays up again - which I'm sure it will - at least I hope they will replace it without a quibble
Thanks Been Beenie. Your input was quite valueable. Not really a straight forward process rather a bit long; but according to the consumer law, I got my phone replaced. The only bad experience in the process was the store genius(es) who were least helpful and kind of pushing always to pay for a fix (atleast in my case; it was a manager but who straight away refused to accept the consumer law. I showed him Apple's own webpage but he was blunt in saying that he hasn't got time to go through all this; they don't entertain consumer law at all ! ). The online and telephonic support was all very helpful and not to praise them would also be unfair and its because of them my case was resolved.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION. My wifi and bluetooth both randomly stopped working. I tried everything from restoring to resetting my network problems and none of these solutions worked.
So I let my battery run down fully. I then kept trying to start it (to use up any remaining battery power). After 5-6 times of trying to restart it, i connected it to the charger and turned it on....and it works!! Wifi and bluetook are back!
Hope this helps! 🙂

Apple though, really, upgrade 4s users to teh 5 or don't.
But don't tell us to upgrade.

Just like in the link, held a dryer on the phone for until the temperture error. Placed it in the fridge wrapped lightly in a paper towel to prevent condensation and the wifi is now functioning.
AH - MA - ZING.
This fixed it for me. No more wifi problems on my iPhone 4S

Turn off all this crap in location services, and now wifi turns on and connects to my network!!
Apple Store TOLD ME it was a broken motherboard and I HAD to buy a new phone!!!!! Now my 3 year old iphone 4 is working perfectly after turning off the excessive options in Location services. Oh my god, thank you.
You're welcome
Well it was short lived. I woke up today and wifi is once again greyed out. The location Services fix lasted 3 days. I'm giving up on my iphone 4 and gonna go samsung

If that works for you, great. Just be sure to take extra precautions for your account security, including your email accounts, bank accounts, and credit card information.
Same here.
Hair dryer tricked workedd for about half a week, accidentially powered all the way down, when charging noticed the spinning WiFi trying to connect. Restarted the phone.
Back to grey.
I miss Jobs' Apple.

That's odd. Because Jobs signed off on the iPhone 4S.
Jobs was CEO of Apple until August of 2011. The iPhone 4S was developed under his watch, and was released only two months after he resigned for health reasons.
Slow down Ice man.
The issue is via an overheating scenario being created by iOS 7, it has nothing to do with the hardware, its a software issue.
ALSO - the issue is not being addressed, no updates, no free upgrades, no coherrent ability to downgrade to iOS6 and most of all no admittance from Apple.
None of that would happen from Jobs, cuz he'd read these boards and go rattle some cages.

You're statement that this is an iOS 7 only issue is not true. My iPhone 4s, running iOS 6 experienced the same issue and when I had the phone replaced under warranty at Apple store I was told by the Apple representative that it was a hardware issue.
