Try the troubleshooting suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and if that does not help, a user has found that it helps to:

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb ON

Power down and wait 5-10 minutes

Power up

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb OFF

If that does not help, backup your content and go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and then restore from the backup.

If that still does not help, take it to an Apple store genius bar for testing by the technicians.

the repair job will keep you happy for nearly 5 to 7 weeks and the wifi will be gone again. they also just apply heat to 're-flow' and do not do any replacement or anything. even if the chip is replaced (which i think will be costly), i wouldnt be surprised if the problem recurs.

i have got it done again for the second time but conked off again quickly. Now, I also apply the hair-drier which keeps it alive for sometime upto 10 days and sometime lesser. In the latest attempt, it was not coming back at all after 5 or 6 heating attempts. Then I held the hair-drier in such a way that it only hits around the head-phone socket corner, preventing the hot air flow across the entire phone surface. when the air flow covers a larger part of the phone, the 'iphone is hot' message comes quickly. also, i have put the blower at a lower speed. most of the time, i have held the direction of the flow towards the head phone side against the phone. the hot warning came much later due to this. that seems to have helped and the wifi came back after 2 or 3 restarts. i have now upgraded it to the latest 7.1.2 also hoping against hope that something there will help.
Apple, after experiencing the 'top of the world' stay, cannot come out of their invincibility feeling; happens after tasting too much success. they are stubborn that they cant go wrong. only the customer can go wrong. the last thing they care about is good business practices or ethics in the way they dont care about this 'manufacturing' defect of iphone 4s. the worst thing is that by infiltrating these forums, they focus on the 'semantics' and think that through their 'programmed logic', they can convincingly turn the 'plaintiff' into a 'defendant'! They are not willing to address the worst manufacturing defect in a phone and on top of that trying to make money on the customers plight...with all that $200 stuff. Customers in India pay a bomb for the 'factory unlocked' iphone unlike the customers in the west with 'contract' plans. so, we here bleed the most...

i want to know why, if i have a perfectly working iPhone, in or out of warranty, and i do an update (every time that apple realize's that there are issues with the previous update), and my phone works perfectly prior to the update. then WHY should i have to pay for a new phone ? when it was their update that causes the issue to fail. it comes to basic monopoly, and all they do is blame the condition of the phone, when i have never dropped it, manipulated it or damaged it, then please explain to me why i should pay for their mistakes, as far as what i have seen and been told they are responsible and i wont pay for someone else mistake ??????

Thanks to Ralph's suggestion

"Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb ON

Power down and wait 5-10 minutes

Power up

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb OFF"

The first time I tried this method, it only worked for about few seconds;

I tried the same method the third time, and now I have my WiFi back!!

Thank you very much, Ralph!! You rocks! 🙂

Just to let everyone know of my own experience today and thanks to all you guys for your suggestions. I tried them all, but what worked for me, albeit temporarily, is the fridge method. I just put the phone in a plastic container, put it in the fridge (not freezer) for half an hour, then turned power off and on again, and lo and behold wifi!!! But then sadly, as the phone warmed up again (maybe?), the greyed out wif-fi has gone, but 'choose a network' is not choosing anything, and so it seems the phone is doomed to forever live in the fridge, as Lucifer in the icy level of Dis.

Dear Sarah

Did you try restart your phone before network reset?

Actually same as yours my iphone did not respond after network reset and restart at first.

may be you should first reset your network reset ( setting>general>reset>reset network setting) and after that try to restart your device.

if it did not work, I do not know what should you do next.... 😟 but I hope it will work

take care

Thanks Emad, but that didn't work either - tried a few times 😢 Anyway, I guess I can live without it for now - as I get an upgrade in November with my service provider. But any other ideas all welcome - I guess I'll try the fridge trick again, and see if it stays on after that, but as said before, I don't really want my phone to spend its life in the fridge!😉
