Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

After a bit of web surfing I ran across this thread. The last 15 minutes or so, the screen on my 2013 MBP running MacOS High Sierra, has gone black several times. After reviewing this thread, I realized that my iPhone was near the laptop (running on battery). My iPhone case has a magnetic clasp and I just realized that every time the magnetic clasp passes over or near the Thunderbolt port on my laptop, the screen immediately goes black.

I have now done this multiple times to confirm I am not imagining things. It was just so odd, it took me a few minutes to make the correlation.

Hope this information helps someone.

I had the same problem. Getting a blanc screen in Outlook.com on safari and google Chrome on my macbook air.

It started a few days ago. I read that a root certificate would help, but not for me.

I just endedin resetting safari. (Open Safari, go to the word Safari next to the apple logo and find "reset safari" in the menu. After that I was able to log into Outlook.com again and also in Skype.

You are awesome. After wasting time talking to 3 different techs, who advised a PRAM/ SMC reset...which did nothing, then tried to shuffle me into one of their stores- I read your posts.

I had the exact same problem. It is really disheartening to know that these techs deny this as a problem. The last chat I had, I linked your post. Tech said they were unaware.

Fingers Crossed for an update, or a recall.

Same problem with a mid-2013 MacBook Air 13.3" and it's getting worse.

Freezes and blacks out when in sleep mode, then wouldn't wake up rather than automatically reboot. It did this in front of a client.

Tonight it froze completely and wouldn't switch on at all. After repeated attempts it eventually came back.

It behaved like this before and after upgrading to 10.9, so it's a hardware issue and is going back as it's only 15 weeks old.

Not at all happy. Made me look like an idiot in front of my clients who all had a good chuckle about my expensive paper weight.

I've got a 10 year old dinosaur of a Windows laptop by Compaq, there's a single line of LEDs failed on the screen, that's it.

I expected far better for a top of the range laptop.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that after a lengthy chat to Apple Support, they will not acknowledge the fault's existence, nor will they accept the laptop back. My MBA is a mid-2013 model, has a dreadfully faulty audio output, locks up when it sleeps, and sometimes when it shouldn't even be going to sleep. It's a faulty product, there's no upcoming patch to remedy the problem, and Apple are not interested in fixing this mess. The best I can hope for is a "repair" which apparently cannot actually fix the problem. I'm now using my old C2D MBA for presentations and meetings as I've had some nightmare demos lately where I have had to interrupt sessions to force shut down and start over. Thank you Apple. - A long-time fan.

So nearly half a year after this nasty fault was first reported on CNET, Apple has still not put forward a fix. If a fix is not rolled out within the default warranty period, you are left with a faulty product and no means of replacement or repair.

Initially I doubted that this was a hardware fault, but now I'm inclined to think it is as Apple Support still claims to know nothing about it and today suggested to me that this forum thread was full of hyperbole. Apple support have said I cannot get a refund because I bought it from a different retail chain, but that retail chain issued instructions to approach Apple regarding the claim.

I can't get enough time off work to make the long journey to the Apple Store, and the Apple Store cannot offer me a weekend appointment to come in on my own time. Because I live in Australia, Apple say I cannot mail the machine in for diagnosis or repairs - so I'm effectively stuck with this unreliable computer that I paid a premium price for.

Finally, they gave me a link to submit a complaint, but on submission of the complaint, the confirmation page said they would not respond to me. What now?

Hi

I just called Apple and have my machine booked in for investigation at a local independent Apple retailer.

I did point out this issue had been reported months ago on CNET as I was hoping he'd be able to say Apple had a solution by now. The guy I spoke to is of the opinion it's either a faulty hard drive or power control module.

When I asked about the forum, he became dismissive, "We sell millions of computers. There's only a few people with a problem posting many times and threads. We don't worry about the forums," in other words, what we're doing on here Apple don't care about.

This forum exists so we can all moan at each other whilst Apple laugh down their sleeve all the way to the bank. It gives the illusion of caring, the illusion of support. Does Apple give a monkey's if a few people are having problems? Clearly not. They're a colossus, a marketing lead money making machine and we are of no consequence.

I'm hoping the independence of the retailer means they'll be more open about what they're seeing and fixing, so I'll let you all know what they say.

Meanwhile, what we need is Facebook and Twitter, a public forum to tell the world what Apple are up to.

Remember, this is the company that used slave labour in China to make it's computers and did nothing about it until people started killing themselves and it arrived in a public forum. They're just another faceless corporation, no better than Microsoft et al.

A lot of posts are disappearing off this thread. I'm not sure why as none have been offensive or misleading - one post advising us of our warranty entitlements and consumer rights that was made yesterday has mysteriously disappeared, while a few others have vanished too. Maype the posters deleted them, or maybe it was Apple. Another post suggesting the potential for a class action against Apple is also notably absent. I don't know that a class action is the way to go, but it certainly looks like a product recall should be on the cards.

I guess it's a good thing that Apple might be reading this thread, but I'm a bit concerned that they might be censoring this issue as opposed to addressing it.
