MBA 11" i7 8GB 512GB
Bought in June.
Start having the problem since 21.10.13 under 10.8.5.
Upgrade to 10.9, still the problem.
Clean install 10.9 from USB + iCloud restore, still the problem.
Clean install 10.9 from USB, still the problem.
Clean install 10.9 from restore partition + iCloud restore, still the problem.
Clean install 10.9 from restore partition, still the problem.
The problem, mainly when it's on battery (2-3 times on power cord plugged), the screen goes black, even when nothing is launched except Finder, and I have to press 5 seconds on power button to turn MBA off, turn MBA back on re-log and restore open applications (if they were some).
Appointment is planned tomorrow morning (Monday) at 10:20 at Genius Bar.
Will keep the post updated.
Have a great day.
I have the same problem on my macbook air haswell even in Mavericks. I already resettet Pram + SMC and deleted Chrome but it still occurs.
In Mavericks the easiest way for me to reproduce this issue is to:
hit the power button (this puts the macbook air into sleep mode in mavericks)
and after 0-1 seconds hit any other key as if you wanted to prevent your macbook from going to sleep
The probability to get a black screen (that means i have to hard reset) is 30%.
I've only been having this problem after upgrading the recent update including mavricks, and most of the ocassions heppens when I try to move the laptop from the right side (which seems to be very odd considering there's really nothing mechanical inside the machine).
An appointment has been made with the genius bar but I fear that replacing the machine might not resolve the problem. Please if anyone could give me more info on how they resolve this problem. Any help will be appreciated.
P.S As I recall this first happened when I was trying to wake the macbook as the screen was just about to black out due to power management, and it happened several time since.
forgive if I have used this forum incorrectly by replying to original post.
Received MBA i7 8G 256G about 20 days back, updated to Mavericks on day of release (UK), 1st incidence of black screen occurred yesterday, only "finder" window open.
( yes-have Chrome installed, but not operational at the time)
Picked MBA up via front left hand corner, screen blacked, apple logo on screen case active, key board backlight off, 5 mins later grey screen + apple logo, beeps and restart, followed by a big screen of issues to report, duly sent off to apple.
It seems the issue has been around for some time, and I guess the more people that post, the more pressure can be applied to apple for resolution...
This happens to mine aswell. I didn't now what caused it but now I do.
I got a brand new MBA 13"
Trying to wake the MBA when it's initializing sleeping mode makes it freeze. I can see that my keyboard is on by the lights. Have to hardboot in order to start it again.
I have also found more "bugs" concerning horizontal lines.
I'm experiencing the same problems. I don't have Chrome installed. The screen goes blank sometimes when I try and wake from sleep with the backlight staying on. This is my fourth replacement MBA and I am not happy whatsoever. I got this one last week. I can't replicate the old issue with closing and opening the lid but these new issues seem to have taken over. I'm just fed up with such a problematic product.
I am having a problem similar to the above video on a mid 2013 MBA 13" 1.7 i7 8GB Ram. The problem has occurred while in the middle of using various software (including Word, Excel, and Safari) and at other times while trying to 'wake' the display when it is off for power saving options. I have owned the computer since late July and have just started experiencing the problem quite freqeuntly (seems to correspond to the latest updates for Mountain Lion, 10.8.5). Still have the problem after reseting the PRAM, etc. The computer also suffers issues with disapeering cursors on a few programs (such as explained in: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5134749?start=0&tstart=0 ). Overall, worse mac that I have owned.
It's not clear to me if these posts are all describing the same issue or not, but I've been having roughly the issue described in the original post (merrily working along, suddenly the machine goes to sleep, and you need to wait a while for it to save its state so you can re-wake it) since 5 minutes after unboxing it in June. As described in some posts here, often, it seems to be triggered by accidentally momentarily sleeping the display in a hot corner-- you immediately move the mouse, but 30 secs to a minute later, it goes to sleep completely.
Anyway, although I haven't uninstalled Chrome or taken any other special steps to solve the problem, curiously, it seems to have become very rare over the last couple months. I'd say that it happens maybe once a week, or even once every two weeks, even with relatively heavy use. Mavericks neither worsened nor solved the problem; it still happens once in a while.
Overall, it seems to have reached the state of a "manageable disease", though obviously I would be much happier if it never happened at all...
This happens to me as well. MBA mid 2013, OSX version 10.9, 1.7GHz intel i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
This is happening several times a week, powercord always in, usually running a multiple of programs including Chrome. It has only gone totally unresponsive three times, today most seriously in the middle of an international web conference.
I have had three variations of the screen blacking-out experience - screen goes black and:
1. cursor visible and controllable, keyboard remains lit
2. no cursor visible, but keyboard remains lit
3. nothing, no light, no response, just as if the machine were totally turned off (that's what happened today - I had a VGA cable inserted at that time)
It is deperessing that Apple does not appear to recognise this as a problem that it might help with, given the evidence of people in this forum not having a good customer experience, not at all.
