PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D Burning?

I just installed the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D and have it playing my cd's and DVDs just fine, however, I can't seem to burn DVDs. I noticed this is a popular model and would be greatful if anyone could flip a solution my way.
I'm using 10.3.9

I just installed a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D. I used patchburn, burns disks perfectly. However I'm not sure if I can burn dual layers. my idvd still reads 4GB capacity. here's what my profilier reads:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:

Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
Revision: 1.23
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

The highest firmware on pioneers site is 1.23.
Is there something more I need to do to burn dual layers?

I just replaced a Pioneer DVR-AO5 with a DVR-111D on my Sawtooth Mac (G4 AGP) running OS 10.3.9. When installed the OS will recognize the drive but Apple software will not. Toast will. With the mod suggested it works fine.

I called the Pioneer support line and found out the following:

1. Pioneer does not support this drive for Apple, unlike the old one I had. One must use a third party patch to make the device compatible.
2. In order to upgrade the firmware ( mine came with 1.06) to the latest which is 1.19, I would have to remove the drive, mount it in a PC and then flash the firmware.

Had I done my homework more thoroughly, I would not have bought this burner.

Nicholas:

Please see my previous post, enable the drive with Patchburn, and be happy again. Alternately, upgrade to Tiger.

You might want to review others' experiences here (plug in the drive type and model and click "search"):

Gary,

Please re-read carefully my post. What I said was: "With the mod suggested it works fine." I was referring to the suggestion in your post. I am not impressed with Tiger, as I view it as an other attempt to forced obsolescence. Some of my video cards, won't go to sleep, cannot boot from OS9, etc., I could fill pages.

I stand by what I said: I don't feel it is worth paying $40.00 for an unsupported drive then scurry around to make it work. I sense though, that it may not be the manufacturer's fault, since this and other drives work perfectly well as "Plug and Play" under Windows XP. Why can't Apple do the same?

They have; new drives are plug & play in Tiger, Tiger is the current OS, whether you choose to use it or not.

Running PatchBurn is hardly "scurrying around", it's not even a "hack" as was needed with older OS's, it's just a support file that the OS will refer to for burn support. It's great that Chris even bothered providing such software for free.

$40 is so cheap compared to what drives cost only a couple of years ago, it's amazing that there are more than one or two manufacturers even bothering.

This will probably all change once blu-ray & other technologies take over; we''l be back to having to pay $$$ for drives....

Hi, Mando!

Hussein, our resident burner Guru, kindly provided the following information regarding DL burning with iDVD5 in a previous topic some time back:

in iDVD5, you need the hacked version [of Patchburn 3*] from Macbidouille.com to enable iDVD5 burn support of DL media (found under Project Info, set media size to 8.3GB).

*added for clarification

Also, is it possible to hack the
DVD-RW-111D to Region 0 ?
Or an original Pioneer Super Drive DVD 104
to Region 0 ?

Region 0 is not a valid drive setting. Maybe you mean a drive that has never had a region set. A RPC-2 drive can have the region set only five times. A RPC-1 an have an unlimited number of region settings. All drives shipped since 2000 are RPC-1, but some can be flashed with modified firmware to make them RPC-1. See <http://www.rpc1.org>

Flashing the DVR-111D requires a PC.

Hi, mdeange, and welcome to the Discussions!

Here's a link to the MacBidouille dual-layer hack info, translated from French into English and posted at Hardmac.com. There's an download link for MBiDVD4ALLDVD.sit half way down the page. (It's obscure and perhaps should have been html coded with a colored link...) Click on it if you want to download it. Read the instructions carefully, particularly since you already installed Pachburn.

I don't know enough about region code flashing to answer your Region 0 questions. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will join in. If not, here's a link to rpc1.org to get you started for more info. Alternately, start a new topic with the question as the subject and someone will likely reply.

I hope this helps you some. Sorry I don't have more knowledge concerning this...
