iMac won't play video, nor will VLC player (.dat format)

I am attempting to play a video that is in an unusual file format; it's burned onto a disc and there are several file formats, but the main file appears to have the extension ".dat"

When I attempt to play it on VLC media player, the following error message pops up

"No suitable decoder module

VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf".

Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."

I know "undf" means "unidentified."

I need to be able to review this file for work.

Is there a safe program that folks would recommend? I did some research and there were a few recommended players that MIGHT be able to play such a file, but they appeared to be adware.

What can I do to get this DVD file to play?

Wise ones, what sayeth you?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Have you tried QuickTime?

Couid try this.

Yes - I tried QuickTime. It will not play the file either.

Is this eltima player safe to download, as far as you know?

I want to be able to play the video, but I want to avoid downloading any adware or spyware.

Site looks legit. They sell a Pro version of this app. Hopefully, you can play this file with the free version.

Plus, they have other free and pay apps for OS X and for different web browsers on OS X.

I don't see anything about the site that looks malicious.

I am really surprised that VLC couldn't play the file.

at least some eltima software used to add kernel extensions to the system, which is unusual for a video player/converter...

if it's just an application, requiring no 'install' and it doesn't ask for a password... you should be ok, but otherwise be clear on how to remove it fully beforehand.

Hi, I know I'm 3 years late. But this software really works. Elmedia plays this VLC decoder module issue just fine.
