Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
Since the most recent update - my external speakers (iHome brand) no longer work with my Mac Mini. However if I unplug those speakers then sound comes out of the Mini unit itself -- but nothing at all when I plug in the speakers.
I contacted iHome, there is no updates/software associated with them. I already restarted the computer several times hoping that would do the trick. NOTHING.
Help.....
Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
1. Take a look at System Preferences > Sound > Output and see if your speakers are showing up and are selected.
2. Take a look at Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI setup. If the Audio Devices window is not visible, up at the top find the Window menu and scroll down to Show Audio Window. See if your speakers are showing up in the column to the left and are selected, and not muted.

I will have to see what I can do there but not sure and will surely take me more than a day as I am home bound and don't drive anymore due to my age and physical condition. It's those golden years.

Hi Jay,
Found a friend who has a speaker with similar plug as mine. He is coming over to shop for me some groceries next Tuesday and will bring the speaker along and I will check it out. I recall some where in the last two days I got some loud wierd sounds out of my speakers and am now suspecting I may have blown them. If so teh mystery will be solved. I will get back next wekk and let you know if the mystery is solved.

Thanks for all your help Jay. You were right in your suspicions. My speakers were blown. Put the new ones on there that my frien brought over and they work just fine. So new speakers are on my agenda.

Hardware/Software issues are difficult to troubleshoot at times and we often default to the software side when a more basic problem exists. I'm am sorry to hear your speakers are blown but glad you know it and can replace them. What good is iTunes without decent speakers?

Thanks for this Jay - I was ready to pull the whole set up apart but followed this advice and Hey Presto my Sound Sticks are back. Pity all problems dont have such simple solutions but always go for the most obvious first (which I didn't).

I too have lost 3.5mm jack output since the last software update. As a bit of tech idiot I'd rather not try to go into the innards of my Mac and re-anything. Can I simply just unload the last update and stop it from loading again please? Was working fine till 24 hours ago prior to last update.
External speakers do not show up on the Midi program in Utilities, tried to add them but no go.
My speakers (both sets using 3.5mm pins/jacks) work fine on my iphone, my android and portable MP3 player. So its probably not a blown speaker(s). Sick Lion?
