    If you want to project content on your iPad to your Mac or TV, you would use Airplay.

    Thanks- I'm still wondering  ...  I want to connect the thunderbolt port on my MacBook Air to the lightening port on my ipad for high speed data transfer. Is there an adapter for that?

    No, there is no such adapter.

    Only Apple could come up with thunderbolt and lightning that don't work together.

    We can complain about Apple's business decisions, but these discussions are user to user talk about possible solutions.

    Wifi is much faster than it was in the past.

     

    You can do file transfer with iTunes via usb connection.

     

    You can do ethernet cable connection.  Don't know what apps support data connection. get some ftp client.

    -- powered usb hub

    -- apple usb to ethernet adapter.

    Apologies, I did not find how to reply in general to this thread, this is not meant to be a specific reply to Faster77.

     

    One use of cables that I think Apple is over looking with the response of "use airplay" and models that only have a single port, etc is recharging devices.  I travel extensively and use the ports on my MacBook for charing my iPhone/iPad/bluetooth headset.  If I have two other USB devices plugged in (i.e. thumb drives, etc.) I do not have an available USB port to plug in my phone or tablet - but there's this fabulous thunderbolt port sitting unused.  As any business traveler can tell you it's not a realistic answer to say "wall chargers" for all these other devices (phone, tablet, blue tooth headset, speakers, whatever)  a few extra cables plugging into the ports on the laptop is a much easier re-charge solution.  Not to mention a whole lot less to dig out while sitting at the airport and doesn't hog all the outlets either.

    Some vendor's are going to love this answer:

    How about a USB 3.0 to USB-C adapter for less than $20.

    USB 3.0 USB-C Male to USB-A Female Cable, 6-Inch

    Therefore, you can use the lightening or thunder -to- USB 3.0 -to- this adapter USB-C.  If the USB-C is not what your looking for, then well there are countless other USB 3.0 -to- just about everything else. 

     

    Its a good educated guess and I'm going to try it.  I have an Ipad Pro and the lightning port adapters are expensive or non-existent.

    There are several thunderbolt hubs around with USB3 ports that should allow the Mac to connect to the iPad. i use an OWC product. But they are ridiculously expensive for your needs.

    If you are after a device to connect an audio product with (only) thunderbolt output to an iPad then I do not expect this is possible. Thunderbolt really needs a computer to manage the data.
