I can't upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion

I have a Mac Pro (1.1.1) running Snow Leopard (Mac OS X10.6.8.) I want to buy and upgrade to Mountain Lion. I've followed the instructions on Apples webpage http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/ and have (I thought) met all the criteria to upgrade. However, when I go to the app store and attempt to purchase Mountain Lion, I get the message:

We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer.

Where do I go from here?

Mac Pro 1.1, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Give us one (or two) reasons just why someone would NEED 10.8?

To use a GTX 680 might be one, or to address 48GB RAM another.

A new 10.9 is around the corner, though I would wait six months (it took two years to get the final Lion with all the bugs gone, so actually upgrading you never want "Dot Zero" release).

iMessage? all the iOS integration? try Lion - if that isn't enough or you still think you need something but we are also between the EOL of the Mac Pro 5,1 and the debut of the new redesigned tower into a cylinder. Major change, major adoption of new OS req'd.

You can buy 2009s for a lot less but why? And no I would not touch a 2008 to run ML unless it was free.

Apple still sells ref'd 2010's for $1800, rather expensive just to run ML.... and what is it yours won't do that a few upgrades wouldn't accomplish? 10.6.8 and Lion still get security updates though I think Lion has added a few.

Maybe then you can make this thread "solved" and closed.
