Apple Mail downloads messages twice (marks my read messages as unread)

Hey guys,

MacBook Pro Retina, OS X 10.8.3

Mail 6.3

I download my messages.
Read them.
They correctly mark as read.

Then 5 minutes later Mail says it's downloading them again, and they mark as unread.
They don't duplicate, just re-download, and mark as unread.

It seems to consistently download them TWICE for each one.

Kind of an annoying bug.
Anyone know what could be causing it?

As far as I know it acts this way with my comcast and gmail accounts... maybe all of the other ones too, not totally sure.

I would rather not remove messages from server, since once in a while I find myself without my home computer and needing to get access to my past emails. Everything worked fairly swell for me for years (had this setup for about 10 years, migrating from one Mac laptop to another). So I just want to get it back to working. Sorry I haven't tried the other solutions yet, getting to real soon. Thanks everyone for their recommendations!

Hi Linc,

I just did this.
It took a little while to rebuild, but it seems to be up and going now.
Some of the messages (I think two?) lost their "subject" and "from" content and ended up getting all garbled up inside as well. But if that's all that's missing, I am ok with it. So far it seems like there are no duplicate downloads happening, but I'll take a "wait-and-see" approach to fully verify this.

Thanks a lot for your help here,

Keeping fingers crossed this rebuild did the trick,

Z.

Things got weird again.
Some fresh emails came in in an email thread.
Some previously read emails are now marked as unread and VIP.

I take the "VIP" star off of them, and the "read" blue dot remains. Almost no matter what. When I double click the email to bring it to my attention (to make it read), it starts blinking between VIP and unread status, and VIP auto comes back.

The mailbox now (after I freshly went through all of the new emails) says I have 0 new messages, but the messages I've read keep blinking between VIP star and UNREAD blue dot.

Am I missing some new quirky Mail behavior? Or is this a bug?

Today, the email chains went back to exhibiting this behavior where the old emails blink between "unread" and "VIP". It's a bit annoying, as the email auto-jumps to that point when I open the thread. If someone knows what this is about and how to disable the auto-vipiing tendency of Mail, it would be appreciated.

My email count is correct.
