New Airport Time Capsule Dropping Wifi/Internet with 7.7.1

Last week I bought a new Airport 2TB Time Capsule and had everything up and running within minutes. However, less than 24 hours later, the wifi signal started dropping devices all around the house. It started with the AppleTV, and eventually dropped our iPhones and iPad as well. The problem is one I've seen on these forums before (however, not with this new model).

I since exchanged it, and the new model is having the identical issues.

Basically, the problem is 1 of 3 things:

1. You'll look down at your iPhone (or whatever device that is wirelessly connected), and see a full wifi signal. However, you'll have lost access to the Internet. Using the AirPort app won't find the Airport Time Capsule. Sometimes turning off wifi on the iPhone and turning it back on fixes the issue, sometimes the Airport Time Capsule needs to be restarted.

2. The AirPort Time Capsule stops broadcasting SSID at random intervals. Even when standing right next to it, there is no way to join the network.

3. The Internet connection drops in the middle of a browsing session (usually while using an iPhone).

On both devices (the original new one, and the replacement exchange), I immediately ran the firmware update. So, I'm thinking this could be a firmware issue.

This router replaces a Linksys e3000 that was working flawlessly. It's connected to a Cox Cable Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem (modem only, no router). The AirPort Time Capsule runs in WPA2 protected mode. It's running DHCP and NAT, and 2.4 and 5ghz are currently running the same network name (although I've tried separating them to no effect).

I am at my wits end. I find it hard to believe that both of these routers are defective. And I also find it hard to believe that I'm doing something wrong in the setup of this simple device, considering I've been working with all kinds of very complicated routers for over a decade without this kind of problem.

So I come to you, community, for help!

Thank you in advance!

I don't have one.. but your testing is conclusive.. the TC is not stable on this firmware.. Apple will no doubt fix it .. I think their secrecy in marketing leads to less than adequate testing.. you are expecting to buy a mature product.. remember this is a ground breaker.. this is the first all new design since Gen1 TC.. all previous models used Maxell processor and chipset.. albeit with various wireless cards.. now it is broadcom.. processor and wireless.. this also runs apple written firmware.

Broadcom OEM firmware.(linux and hence open source) supplied to all manufacturers of products based on the chipset.. well that would be just wrong for apple... it has to be done in NETBSD,, so it is not open source.. the very thought.. open source.. . that would give everyone access to controls apple don't want you to have.. http setup even.. couldn't allow that.. so apple have to write the firmware from scratch and to match all those apple protocols. Hence where they are now now.

And your role is beta tester.. didn't you know. 😝

Return it and stick with your Linksys (broadcom, Linux open source) until Gen 6 TC comes out. 😉

Unless you like the bleeding edge.

After reading this thread, I'm wondering if it's the firmware that is causing my problem. I have an Airport Express that is dropping "offline". The indicator light on the AE shows green but the SSID is not being broadcast and all the computers that connect to it wirelessly are knocked off line. I thought at first it was my cable modem and the router just needing a cold boot. I did that and replaced the cable modem with a new one. Problem seems to be less frequent but still there. I was going to go to my local Apple store and buy the new time capsule and while doing some research to see if the new TC fixes the heat problem of the old one ran into this thread. Now I'm not sure if I want to buy a new one in hopes that the problem isn't my AE but rather it's the firmware. Hmmmmm.

I just picked up a new Airport Extreme ac model last weekend and as having the same issue a lot are reporting where the WAN would drop off, but wifi and internal network was ok. I ran some ping tests against my default router on the cable side and found it was happening every 45-55 min, and would last from 1 to 3 minutes. If I had the Airport Utility open and clicked Renew DHCP Lease, it would imeddiately come back. After about 36 hours, I gave up and put my old router back, which worked ok.

After reading about some people's issues with IPv6 on their cable providers network, I tried the new AE again and made sure to set IPv6 to Link local on the internet tab, and it has been rock solid for nearly 24 hours now. So that was definitely my own issue.

This thread pointed me in the right direction though.

Its the Dhcp server, You have to refresh the DHCP server on the devices.

I had the same problem, I bought a new airport extreme 802.11 AC, initially i thought it was just a defective unit, than I went back and exchanged it for a time capsule 802.11 ac and the same thing happened, I kept it for a week before I got so frosturated I had to return it. I can fix the problem, however other people are computer not so computer savy in my house and getting woken up and text all day because there cell phone and computer lost conection wasn't working for me.. If you can return it still, I sugest doing that, I love apple but this product is significantly under par. If you could get your hands on a 5th gen airport extreme they work great also i have a airport express conected together i get full data coverage and typically 300-450mbs on computers and 72-150 mbs on my cells. I will have to wait until they fix it, I would hope they would replace anyones who bought that generation with a new one once it comes out, but you never know.

Oh yeah,, When i looked into it I found that devices would use what ever was connected into the lan port as an internet conection instead of the wan,, the device sends out bad information..

steps to refresh the dns/ dhcp and domain

Iphone

1 settings

2. wifi

3 click on the i with a circle around it (on the right hand side of the network you are connected to)

4. if you see in "search domain something that is not your internet provider or device/ router conected to your time capsule like a non-apple router than you have bad enformation getting sent to your device (its most likely something pluged into one of apples lan ports)

5. scroll down until you you see "renew Lease" than click it

Mac

1 system preferences

2 Network

3 wifi

4 advance

5 if you click on DNS,, youll find in the search domains something that is once again not correct ( this step is just to show you and mac what is the real problem,, you don't need to do it to temp- fix it)

6 click on TCI/IP

7 click on "Renew DHCP lease"

The same basic steps goes for every type of device, the name alternates between "Renew DHCP Lease" and Renew Lease" and even DNS,, depending on the device operating system...

You will have to do this every time, this happens and for me it did it alot.

my ultimate response to fix it is, if you can return it still return it.

if you cannot return it, and you can unplug any device pluged into Lan ports do so

if you cannot unplug device from the lan port,(or if that dosent fix it) than follow the above steps every time this happens

Hi PePaHa, I also have the same problem with my Time Capsule 7.6.4 - All of my devices disconnect every other day. No signals are appearing on the devices. The light is still showing green on the TC 2T - I have spent countless hours over the phone with Apple Support. Exchanged the device, still disconnect but now reconnect most of the time without having to power cycle it... The most recent call with Apple support was today and after going through all of the settings that are correct according to him, and that it isn't caused by an environment issue or IP issue, it seems like it is a hardware/firmware issue with the TC. I am at wits with this problem that has been dragging endlessly... I am thinking of returning it altogether and buy a different brand. Any suggestions will be welcomed!

This is offtopic which is to do with the AC model and 7.7 firmware.. you are on earlier firmware and v7.6 firmware.

It is better to post your own thread.. but here is what I would post anyway.

You should at least try a reset of the TC and go back to 7.6.1 firmware.. I know not everyone has issues with the latest.. but my experience is the latest firmware on the Gen4 TC, 7.6.4 is buggy and particularly the wireless side is problematic.

From the point of view of running Mavericks.. and most likely other devices.. buried in apple's info is keeping names to 27 characters.

See OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems

IMHO do a fully manual setup.. and change to very short names.. less than 10 characters and fully control everything.

I have shown here how to do it.

Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs

If pictures don't show up try

Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule

I do not think it cures the problem but may take longer between needing to be restarted.

My situation is a bit different..... My airport extreme / time capsule (2TB) device will simply disappear from the airport utility lineup at random times. If I go unplug the unit and then power it back up it comes back on line and re-appears in airport utility. All the while it is "missing" the internet connection is still working fine but the time capsule function errors and I get failed backup warnings on all my Mac computers.

Today I had to simply bite the bullet and erase the time capsule disk using airport utility and start all over on all of my macs backups..... This could get ugly fast if my wife manages to lose all her recipes

I am running the latest firmware version (7.73) on the unit and the latest version of airport utility. The drive spins down after a while like it is going to sleep and occasionally I can hear it spin up like it is going to do a backup.

Could the cheapo seagate drive be about to die on me? I would like to replace it with a bigger WD or HGST drive.

I have exactly the same issue. On my part I changed all WiFi devices to fixed IP thinking that I had too many WiFi devices and therefore overlap of IP addresses. It did not fix it. My device is new not sure if it was doing this when it was brand new or started few weeks/months after. I find connecting and disconnecting wifi on mobile devices does help at times. I have one Mac with hardwire (ethernet) connection and No issues there. I think the issue is with WiFi and not router portion of TC.

I expected better from an apple device.
