new iPhone restore from old backup and lost new photos

Hi there

I recently got a iphone 5 and from the excitement of seeing Obama in cape town, took pictures of his speech and even recorded my friends shaking his hand and have brief converstaions. Now when i connected the new phone into my mac, itunes requested a restore from old backup. So agreed, not knowing that all the new photos / movies of the US president would be deleted!!!

Can i reftieve them or not. and why doenst Apple provide such informaition to users for new restorations?

Please help!

Same problem. My wife lost her iPhone 3Gs while on vacation. Purchased iPhone 5 on the trip and took pictures with it. When we got back home I clicked restore from a previous backup and all the pictures disappeared.

I wonder if Apple is reading this thread. ?????????

NO... What did you expect the phone to do when you restore from a backup.

You should've imported the new pics to your computer as you would a digital camera..

I expected exactly what I got ... a complete wipe. My wife said there was nothing she needed to save (forgetting about the pictures). I looked for possible salvage solutions and came across this site. With 1608 views this doesn't not look like an uncommon problem. A more explict warning would save a lot of grief.

To recover pictures you don't need any special app.

iTunes copies the files to the backup and uses unique file names

in Windows XP: C: \Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Windows Vista/7: C: \Users\[username]\AppData\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ (or something real close)

you will see a folder for every iPhone backup made - pick one

sort the files by size, for the 3gs and older .jpg files will be about 900kb or smaller (3mb camera) and copy them to a temp folder, then rename all of them to *.jpg (in CMD window: ren *.* *.jpg)

change you view to thumbnail and you will see your pictures

Other solution: try some third party app like: iStonsoft iPhone backup extract, Vibosoft, iPubsoft,Coolmuster , and more...

It happned to me this way. I always import my photo to the iPhoto on my Mac, i just don't trust picture on the iPhone. However I lost my iPhone5, and I have to purchase a new iPhone5s. I went home, plugged my new iPhone5s into my computer and it said do i want to restore my iPhone from 2013 May back up. So I did, the app on my phone is 2013 May, however the songs are gone, the mails are gone... and the PHOTO that I have been storing in my Mac was restored back to 2013 MAY!

I was asked to restore my phone. But I retored my phone and the phone sync with my iPhotos and my photo from the past 5 months are gone! Including my wedding photos....

How can this happened? Why don't Apple just have it default always store the new thing and stop deleting things..

Whether I'm on IOS or Android. I always connect something else to my phone, an app like photobucket snapbucket or googleplus something where I can always automatically upload every pic I take and its kept in a vault that cant be deleted. Then i simply send back or upload back to phone. I have pictures saved as far back as myspace days lol

This is unbelievable. My 1-month-old iPhone 5s just suddenly shut down and did not resurrect and I had to do a restore, which was a month back. So I lost ALL my data, most importantly, my treasured photos taken during a family trip in the recent weeks. Seriously, I can see that I'm not the only victim falling prey to a horrid iPhone system. This is first time ever this has happened in using iPhones.

I am so disappointed in Apple - how can new phones be susceptible to shut downs like this?? Why did I even get a new phone then??

When you set up your new phone, you're given the choice to set up iCloud backup. It's not the phone's fault if you are not backing up what is precious to you. If the phone had been lost, stolen, or damaged, you would also have lost your precious data. It's not Apple's fault if you aren't using the tools you've been given.

Let me clarify, so in your opinion, t's perfectly understandable and foreseeable for a very new phone to crash unexpectedly then? And thus Apple bears no fault?

iCloud does not backup all data since there is limited space - thus it was an option I was not allowed to choose.

frankly if everyone here were to expect the phone to crash so readily despite being new, we would have backed it up every single day.

No, that is not what I said. I said that if your phone had been lost, stolen, or damaged, you would be in the same position you are now without a backup. I DO back up my phone every single day, along with my computer. I just don't want to lose all my data. :: shrug ::

Added: the time to back up is BEFORE something happens, not after. Any computer, including an iPhone, can have problems.

Okay, this is a bit risy, but it worked for me. So, when I lost all my photos, I went through the same steps you did. In order to get EVERYTHING back to normal, I had to go to Settings > Reset > Erase All. Then, when it was rebooting, it asked me if I wanted to reset it back to my last iCloud backup, I clicked yes, and all of my photos were restored. Note: THIS ONLY WORKED BECAUSE MY LAST ICLOUD BACKUP WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. If your last iCloud backup took place a long time ago, before you got all your new pictures, those are the ones that will be lost. Only the photos taken after the backup will be saved.

That being said, don't make the same mistake I did. I got lucky and had everything backed up. Make sure you're backing up to iCloud frequently!!! This is a very awful feature to Apple.

I sympathise with other users with this issue, as I am user of itunes from the time there was no iPhone. And an iPhone user from the time of the 1st iPhone (that I got it within the 1st week of launch). But even I had the same problem again today with my iPhone 5 when I tried to restore my last backup on my Windows 7 laptop. It just deleted everything from the time I bought this phone and restored it to my Old phone data and and settings. So I want to ask a simple question WHYYYYY? I mean Apple is known to create amazing devices but most terrible of softwares I have ever used. That is "Itunes" used be awful and it still is. I just don't understand why do they have to make it sooooo f**** complicated to restore and backup. All it needs is a simple user journey, if I would have been alerted that I will lose my current photos, messages, contacts etc. and that's it. That would made it simple to understand what is going to happen. But NO...obviously they need to make it complicated by over simplifying a journey. I just got one option to chose from either to "Restore it to a prev. backup" or "set up as a New phone". neither of them was good for me, coz I wanted to merge my old backup with my current data on phone. So i thought it will ask me that in the next step. Wollaahhh!! I was sooo wrong and now soo annoyed that I lost my data again. And to be frank this has happened to me twice before and everytime in different ways. And I keep thinking that I got this now and I will be careful. But they manage to surprise me with the stupid interface everytime. My sincere request - "please please pleaseeeeeee get a new and good User Experience and UI expert and fix the application soooon." 😟
