Mountain Lion requires a Mid/Late 2007 or later MacBook Pro, so you can't install Mountain Lion in it. If you want Mountain Lion, get a new Mac. See > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs

I know. OS X Lion will be supported for some years, so if you want, you can carry on using your MacBook
You say that you have a late 2006 MBP with 4 GB RAM. A 2006 MBP accepts a maximum of only 2 GB RAM. You either have the wrong RAM installed or you have a later MBP. Check in System Profiler for the Model Identifier.

the mbp was purchased in april 2007 (thus a 2006 model?). it has 2x 2gb ddr2 sdram blocks intalled.

Click on the Apple icon (right hand top enu bar).
Then click "About this Mac." Then click on "More Info"
It will then tell you the exact year, and early, mid, or late.
