Unlock an AT&T iPhone - what is the "downside"?
I have 2 iPhone 4S purchased on a 2 year contract with AT&T about 1 year ago. These are running the latest IOS - 6.1.3.
We are traveling to the Philippines and want to buy local SIM cards for Globe of Smart while we are there.
Can they actually be unlocked from AT&T's network for use with local SIM cards?
Assuming I can actually unlock the phones from AT&T's network, what is the downside?
Does it mess up iTunes?
Does it break any of the iPhone backups stored on my PC?
Does AT&T "know" I unlocked them when I return to the US and plug in the AT&T SIM?
Or, can I plug in my AT&T SIM card when I return and everything works perfectly?
In the past, I could take my various AT&T supplied phones (Motorola Razr V3 and Ericsson) to any cell phone store in the Philippines and unlock them from the AT&T network stranglehold. Then use the Globe and Smart SIM cards. When I returned to the US, I swapped the SIM card when we landed and everything was perfect.
But, these "smartphones" worry me. I am concerned that I will lose all the content / contacts or erase the phone or the phone will "brick" itself. Or worse, AT&T "finds out" and they will charge me a penalty to rejoin their network.
