My macmini early 2009 says I don't need the EFI firmware update? I have upgraded the ram to 8gb from 2, but only one slot shows in use?

I have been told my EARLY 2009 mac mini can take 8gb RAM, I've opened up and installed, but only one slot is showing in use. I was advised I would need to update the EFI FIRMWARE 1.2, I downloaded that from Apple, but my mac says it isn't needed? any ideas?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Try reseating the RAM in that one slot.

Next try exchanging RAM modules. Maybe you have a bad module.
